boys will be boys. When I was in high school I would take a bandsaw to a 2x4 make a handle and go to town with a friend. Lotsa broken fingers :) even busted my damn wrist.

Yep, it was pretty common for guys to get into fights even if a lot of them were play fights when they were kids where I live. That's part of the reason why it was so neat that I got to practice martial arts in high school. A lot of girls don't get into martial arts over here, so my classes were mostly composed of guys. However, my teacher had been teaching martial arts for many years, was a grandmaster of Tae Kwon Do, originally from South Korea, so he was particular about who he would teach and only allowed certain students to practice at his dojo. He emphasized the self-discipline aspect of martial arts. If someone broke the rules they would not be allowed to practice there anymore.

There were a lot of talented people there. One guy could do acrobatics like me. He wasn't as flexible as I was, but he could jump higher. Another guy that was there was very strong and he let me kick the punching bag as hard as I could with a roundhouse whip-kick while he stood in a rooted position and held it in place. I actually knocked him back a little bit! So, yea, practice fighting can be good, especially if you have good sparring partners.

Smoth used to practice sword fighting in armor with a bunch of his friends in the Society for Creative Anachronisms and I thought that those sword fighting events were neat too, but did not want to participate in them because I couldn't really lift the weapons and armor.

They do drugs, but theyre not gangstas, as much as they want to be.

They want to be seen as 'hard', or some variation on that word, which basically means that you vs them == they win. Only some fo the things Ive seen that they do to prove this are stupid. The number of people who've frowned to look 'hard' as if theyre all serious and the look has stuck *shudders*, nevermind that they think looking hard means they get more girl action amongst other things. Heck they cant even tell the difference between fear and respect.

Not really anyone getting hurt nor is it about ganstas but it's loosely on topic of teen foolingans. This is me and my friends and I a few years back. Oh and I guess it's losely on topic in the sense that one or more did become kind of ganstaish in present times. To set this up my then chunky friend broke my dock and starting floating away.

to someone of lower class or race looking thugish gives them a sense of power and control over the world around them. This is enough to justify the behavior. It doesn't matter if they don't have power, they just need to think they do. Like people who vote.

I didn't want to get involved in the discussion earlier, so I didn't post when the question was asked, but seeing the responses given, I have to at least say this - Chavs/Charvers are in part a consequence of institutionalized bidirectional classism in the UK, but more importantly they're part of a long lineage of youth subcultures. Eventually they too will peak and decline in prevalence, to be obscured behind some other high profile subculture.

EDIT: And so I don't have to post again here, the UK is not a police state because of Chavs or people like Chavs.

Allow me to distinguish chavs from normal people:
Today i got off the train on the way home and as i was walking down the platform this girl hung out the door and said "someone's forgot their wallet!" and i was like "ill go see if i can find whose it is". I took it and checked the id and recognised this chav sitting down on the platform wearing his trackies and nike cap. I checked his name against the one in the wallet and sure enough it was him. As i gave it to him, rather than the "Thank you" or "Cheers" you might expect from a more normal person he goes "awww youre such a lad bruv".
