Freespace and Freespace 2 fo' life.

Freespace 2 is abandonware, so you can download it for free. And it has BEAM CANNONS. So cool.

Yes, but it's a space fighter. That means that we all got sick of the over-simplistic gameplay back when we played X-Wing. The fact is that pounding hundreds of rounds into a giant bulkhead and flying around in a circle trying to catch some guy tailing you (basically chasing your own tail) gets rather dull pretty fast.

Until I see a space fighter game that (a) lets me shoot in a direction other than that of locomotion, and (b) has some really crowded environments, I won't be interested.

I seem to recal from playing Descent Freespace that the 2 bombers had auto-track turrets on top that did there own thing. That game rocked! The last level inside subspace was a FrEaKiN TrIp!! I would not recomend being high and trying to play that level at the same time.

I played the first Descent and thought it was really fun. Though we only had the demo, but we still played Multiplayer. Great classic, but nowhere as cool as Descent Freespace.

Freespace was the coolest game. But our disk got scratched, and I never got to play it again. Since then, ive been on the lookout for Freespace or Freespace 2. Anyone know where I could get them from?

a: I played independance war - it's just about the only series in the genre that I enjoy. And I got out of space sims after being underwhelemed by Tachion, Starlancer, and Freespace.

b: Look at Star Wars. All the best space battles of the series were set in crowded environments - asteroid fields, shoulder-to-shoulder space fleets, the trench run, etc. In open space, half-light-speed doesn't look much different from a snail's pace - you need scenery to convey speed and make manoevering interesting.

That it does - consider that they're running their own "fileplanet" style service, you can probably understand why - a site like that positively eats bandwidth, so they need a lot of nasty advertising revenue to fuel it. Keep in mind that this is not some big-business site - it's just a personal site run by some random Korean (I think) girl. I'd say it kicks ass for what it is.

Yeah man, but the secret levels are rather puzzle levels, and often you can exit the level, save, and re-enter it.

To make D2X-W32 work, you need the original Descent 2 data. D2X-W32 is just an OpenGL port of the executable. Some guy posted the data here:

I prefer D2 over D3. Gameplay just feels better.

Ditto. Descent 2, especially for multiplayer, is a lot better and more intense. Although I do like frag missles! The concept is great. I actually just finished designing a positively epic Descent 2 multiplayer map, just for the hell of it. I'm hoping one day there'll be a way to port it to some kind of spiritual successor.

No, haven't seen your site. URL?

Back in the day, I made a dozen or so single-player levels using a bunch of ideas I had in my head for things I hadn't seen in the D2 campaign missions. A lot of them turned out pretty well, though I never posted them anywhere and they're gone forever now... :( One I made really stick in my mind. It was the last mission on a 15+ mission campaign... All through the level there were very few enemies, but every now and then a bunch would jump on you from out of nowhere - literally. Tried to get a bit of a creepy feeling going. The level itself was rather short, but the big surprise came at the end - the "exit" door opened and revealed a wall with a custom texture saying "under construction. Please use entrance." :lol: Then, at that moment about 10 energy-suckers come and drain all your energy, without dropping any energy powerups. You think you're screwed, but then two "omega" (kamikaze) bots appear once you leave the exit area, one loaded with vulcan rounds and one with a gauss cannon. There's just enough rounds to keep you supplied until you reach an energy center - IF you're very careful with your aim. The player has about 5 minutes to battle through this now enemy-infested level before the mine blows.
