Most people only play the game and use others work, and contribute nothing else than their ass in the player list.
and rest of the ppl also use others work (of some swedish ppl) so...

btw, do spring got any 'spare money' (donations - server costs = ?)

btw

ota models *cough*

it gets kept until the next year's cost has to be paid for.

The best thing is that you could allege it made no sense, which means that you did understand the original context, which means that it did in fact make perfect sense!

I don't believe donations cover the full server cost. There are other expenses for other people as well, which any excess would probably be good to purpose towards.

The closest Spring ever came to this was Google Summer of Code in which developers get paid ~Ôé¼500 iirc. It is pretty attractive to fledgling developers and a lot of open source projects participate there year after year with good results. I don't think Spring qualifies for entry there though.

I paid Ôé¼50 for Starcraft 2, which I hardly even played(maybe 40h?) compared to Spring(600h+), I don't see why you couldn't charge me the same for Spring. Spring has regular updates, matchmaking service and crappy path-finding just like Starcraft 2 does. But if I am going to pay, then everybody else should have to pay too.

Of course this will never happen because the main game for Spring contains copyright material. Too bad this community sucks so hard that we have people working on vanity games(some of which also use copyright franchises, lol) that nobody actually wants to play in a million years, when they could be collaborating to develop a game that people want to play.

side note: ohloh's estimate of dev-time-cost for the Spring engine as it is now: 5.5M$ ;-)

How about milestone related donations? If you donate for this and that milestone implemented, working and near-bug-free, the money is released to the archieving devs- only problem, who is to be trusted with the key to the vaults and who watches the watchmen?

Hell, today i tried my fifth attempt on coding something beyond hello world- its like raping your own brain, me and logic goes together, like trollmagnets. I have really difficulties understanding how somebody can endure this torture without payment, while there is art&ideas-to-do lurking tempting in the back of everyones mind.

And those tutorials, going through tons of global declarations, local variables, what you can, what you cannot, hours of non-handson, broken through by sudden bursts of code- while MS-Visual is giving me a fistfight. Hatethis,thishate,hate.sys.,hishate,atehisfist...if you need mushrooms for my work, or at least borderline-brainclass, you definatly need valium and raphinol to stay befor those scripteditors. :(

And all those words are rigid, once defined you are not allowed to change, play and mutate them, or otherwise the great mechanical machinery will come to a fatal, rapid Halt!

How do i grab stuff out of the world? Is there a sort of list were i can get the unitdefs and stuff from? Worms are eating my brainz.

Well the first time you tried to ride a bike, and you kept falling down and hurting yourself, maybe even feeling a little embarrassed at your failed attempts, it wasn't very fun to ride a bike now was it..

But when you finally figured out how to balance it just right so you wouldn't fall anymore no matter how fast you rode it, that was when it became fun right? Then you started to teach yourself tricks, like how to make it jump etc.

Programming is the same way. If you're serious about wanting to learn it, my advice is to enroll in a CS101 university course. If you're motivated, you will come out knowing how to program at least half decently. You won't be ready to drive a car or fly a plane, that takes a few more years of practice, but it's a (good) start.

You cant possible pay devs, spring would not work as commercial game.

It has few players even when its free.

Best way you can help is by doing stuff yourself.

Atm "surplus" on server is like -400Ôé¼

Even if it was +2000Ôé¼ thats still nothing - i mean thats like 2 weeks of work of one person.

Since this is voluntary work, devs may choose not to work on parts of the engine they are not interested in, or if the work happens to be particularly boring for some reason. So of course you could hire someone to do something in particular for you, but generally speaking I would say it is a bad idea. Better learn some coding yourself and submit a patch.

Cute now go male a game right now without any one of those "suck" people.

There is ample collaboration and the part you fail to see is that outside of argh most of us pd or gpl our work so large parts are already done if you bothered to look at shit beyond ba you would see my code in evo, ca and cursed. But whatever I make a fan game which obviously doesn't benefit the community at all

Spring engine has hundreds of thousands of lines of code.
An average programmer writes about 300 lines of code in a workday, a conservative wage is 20$/hour.
Ill let you do the rest of the math...
