Yeah, silver star, and any rank below that, you choose

I don't see what all the fuss is about.
Doubtless, specing, on average, teaches you less than playing. So why not use jaz's first suggestion, and have spectating give 1/2 amount of ingame time. Seems like a reasonable idea.
The "rank doesn't equal skill" argument is invalid, because if this is the case, it's irrelevant whether we apply the aforementioned method or not. But let's be honest, this argument is just a ridiculous lie dreamt up by the rank 7s who suck balls. If you'd like to test the accuracy of this statement though, we could set up a game of four rank 7s vs four rank 1s and see who wins. I think this would pretty quickly clear up the issue.
You simply need to watch lucido or rzbx play to understand the full gravity of the situation.

halving ingame time gained by spectators would probably be one or two lines of code for me, easy enough. any reasons for me to not do it?

Real smurfs are ok. It's the smurf smurfs that you've got to watch out for.
I think spectators gaining 'rank' is ok as long as people are aware what rank is based on. As in the rank is purely time based so it can only do harm if people put too much meaning on it.

Autohosts do put a meaning on it when balancing games.

i'm confused as to why no one is suggesting an elo ranking system?

Actually elo is already implemented in both springie and spads, isn't being used in spads atm because of some problems, namely that it is tied to player name so everytime someone renames their elo is effectively reset.
But this thread wasn't originally about balance at all, it was about rank e-peen.

makes more sense that people playing 8v8 BADSD should not get any game time exp.
Specs will probably learn more.

IMO the ranks should be calculated in the following way:
1st month = 100%
2nd month = 80%
4th month = 60%
8th month = 40%
16th month = 20%
32nd month = 10%
So if i played 100 hours in the past 1 month, i would get +100 hours in my current rank. From the previous month i would get only +80 hours to my current rank, etc.
So, if i played a lot 2 years ago, but had 1 year pause, my rank wouldnt get to zero, but it would get really low. And thats how it should be...
By using this method, it would be impossible to get veteran rank i think. Unless all you do is play spring
Of course you would still have your total rank in lobby list, but in battle room people would see your decremented rank.

if(user == rANDY) rank = 99999999
one line fix
