No it isn't. Doc will only become obsolete when offices and corporations stop using it. Also, docx sucks in wordperfect x5 and open office and generally does not display correctly, so those issues need to be ironed out as well before the .doc format can be considered "retired".

If you want cross-software compatibility use ODF, if you want the most common office package use docx. Doc is both proprietary (limited compatibility) and obsolete.

Both of thoes have issues. Anyone with an older version of word or wordperfect has to go find converters for them, where .doc has no issues on either open office or Office 2010. Besides, what benefits is there to going to docx?

Its all about the 'x'. Any file extension with an 'x' in it is clearly superior.

Docx (or OOXML) is the standard format of current MS Office packages (and actually an ISO standard). Doc is the format of old (as in 2003, that's 7 years!) packages that is haphazardly supported by other software because it's a weird proprietary mess.

As a better option there's ODF which is fully compatible with free office packages so nobody has to worry about not owning the right version. Seriously people, use ODF. If your word processor is too old for that maybe you should consider upgrading. After all upgrading is free.

In the end, yea, PDF or HTML is best. Right now, Docx in my opinion hasn't fully obsoleted doc, just from what AF has said(and that doesn't even add in Google Docs), and unless you have the proper plugins, you can't "back translate". The other formats on the other hand don't have the translation issues.

Seriously, PDF for stuff that's meant to be read only, ODF for anything meant to be modifiable.

so if someone makes something that is to be printed, for example a keyboard shortcut table, .pdf is ok.

I always put funny pictures I've found in a powerpoint presentation, makes it easier to send by email.

If you have wordperfect or an older version of word download open office and shut up. Your technophobe argument holds no weight here. You're going to perform some function that requires document transfer through the forums and you can't figure out how open office works? No.

Dude...I have the extension to run Docx programs. I myself have no problem with it. Im talking about thoes people who say are using Google Docs, or may not have open office(although being a non-linux user most times, I didn't know it could run Docx)

And further more, neither of you answered my question. In this case, what is the advantage of Docx over Doc?

HTML has the issue that IE has between no and crippled data URI support, so the only way to avoid a zip for images would be mht, which only it and Opera support.

Please, can't we all just agree that TXT is the ultimate format?!
