Those public web cams that can snap pictures of people are neat. We have those at our university. Plus, people like to take pictures with and of their friends and will post them on their websites.AF wrote:Says the person who had a webcam mounted on a web controlled motor base pointed st him 24/7
That's true. Isn't it annoying when things like hate crimes or abuse due to a power struggle occurs? Plus, problems can always occur when when people take common sense things like be careful of what you wear, how you wear it, how you carry yourself, where you walk, when you walk there, with whom you walk, whom you trust, what you do, where you do it, with whom you do it, what you drink, how you drink it, how much you drink, whether you make eye contact, if you're alone, if you're with a stranger, if you're in a group, if you're in a group of strangers, and if it's dark out, out of context. I think that this is what happened with this lady and her being kicked out of school for drinking in her off hours. Someone took the picture of her drinking and wearing a pirate hat out of context and said that it was a sign of her ability to behave responsibly as a teacher when her social drinking probably didn't have anything to do with her ability to be a responsible and professional student or potential teacher. It's not like she was walking down the halls flipping off all of her teachers or anything.Neddie wrote:Your public life is a matter of the level of scrutiny leveled upon you by those around you. Yes it is... everything on internet is popularity contest! Dont you watch southpark?Forboding Angel wrote:Edit: Also, if you're friends with people who you've never met or talked to on facebook, you're an idiot. This shit isn't a popularity contest.
For staying in contact icq is enough at least for me.Panda wrote:
As far as the networking thing goes, a lot of people get into that to keep in contact with their friends. If someone has a lot of friends who are on a social network site, they would probably feel were and get left out of a lot of things if they didn't join the network. I'm not particularly interested in things like Twitter, but I was required to join the site for a class one time, so I could see why someone might want to be on a social network. Besides, with the growing demand for people who know how to use such technology, it seems as though just telling people not join a social network is not the solution.

ICQ is a tool from the age past. It's been about two generations that people switched to MSN. Not saying it's a better tool. I wish IM protocol just were standardized.Machete234 wrote:For staying in contact icq is enough at least for me.
It's funny, because, as a technological person, I would say facebook, twitter, and all those other social networking sites, are not technologically pleasing. Technological people have been using better tools ten years before. Those so called Web 2.0 thing only own their success due to non-technological people using them en masse because they don't know any better. And I'm pretty sure other technological people share this distate of facebook, twitter, and the like. They're used by non-computer-savvy people, maybe by wannabee-geek, but not by true computer nerds.Panda wrote:There's a big push for increased technology usage in all schools over here including the ability to use social networking sites. I could protest against having to do a homework assignment online, but I happen to want to know how to use the technology

You could laugh about this poularity thing in the tv series about 10 years ago but now its just annoying.zwzsg wrote: I also blame the USA for exporting the idea that being popular in high school is more important than grades, with all their TV series featuring prom queen election.

This is in my opinion obviously NOT the real reason the principal fired her.she was promoting drinking in virtual view of her under-age students
I actually started working on some equipment to further shield me from undesired photography a few weeks ago, though that is more out of boredom and surplus electronic equipment of various sorts.zwzsg wrote:Until last week, I didn't mind getting photographed, as I reasoned that anyway, as long as no one knows me, these photos wouldn't be tagged with my name.
Then I realised that image search engine are becoming a reality. A few years from now, it may be possible to input an ID photo in google search query and find all photo matching that face.
So now I just swiftly flip my back everytime I see a phone or camera being aimed.
