As AF said, it would be nice if you could send us the infolog.txt of a game that crashed. I also do not see the problems you have with resolution really.
You have a 1600x1200 screen, but set the resolution to 1024x768 in windows. when setting springs resolution to 1600x1200, and running in full screen... i do not know which resolution it will actually use, but if windows was also set to 1600x1200, it surely would be using that.

Not trying to convince you. you will know better what you need, and i can imagine that spring is not the best choice if saving time is your main goal.

Just out of curiosity, would you mind posting your hardware specs and your OS?
Also, it may not be self explanatory, but you must hit save settings in springsettings after changing them, or else they dont get applied :(

Again, your not helping us by complaining it crashed but giving no details at all.

Also in windows in windowed mode, you can resize the window.

Then dont pick just BA players as the audience? Most of rts playerbase will be playing SC2 or whatever...

Don't ask me what that guy was expecting. You aren't going to get plug-OTS-stuff-together WYSIWYG simplicity with the flexibility to do exactly what you need.

Nah, I can understand that a game that crash on first try don't make you want to persevere. And it's true Spring is ugly compared to modern gaming standards.

However, what I'll want to know is which game he'll settle on and why. And later, what would he have achieved in that other game.

Should suffice as an explanation

I googled V3D, and it does not appear to be anything related to games or engine. I suppose that to make an amateur "Rome Total War"-like, the best would be to make a mod of "Rome Total War" itself. But that's obvious enough that he must have had a reason to rule that out. Maybe he's after a free engine? Since he wants no coding, that rules out general purpose engines like Ogre or UDK. I only know two other free RTS engines, Glest and Warzone 2100. A trip to wikipedia shows there are other free RTS, but they are either unfinished or 2D. Warzone 2100 is uglier that Spring, so he can't pick that one. Glest on the other hand looks a bit like AoE. Also in Glest the modding is done with XML, which is a reputedly extremely simple high level textual data format.

Well, the engine is under constant development. It appears more antiquated than functionally it is because both map and model formats as well as the animation format are further behind much of the other elements.

The amount of work to turn Spring into a Ancient warfare engine seems far too much.
Maybe he still thinks you have to mod the engine to make games. The game tried has a big effect too as Spring is about as ugly as a game designer makes it.
