I've always built depthcharges in these occasions.

On Tropical 2 Gaat Guns plus 2 Depthcharges = epic porc win

iirc depthcharges even got nerfed vs land units because they raped so hard on tropical

They lost the AoE, which AFAICT existed purely to stop the dumb spring bug ('feature') where if a unit is submerged, it wont take damage if hit on an exposed portion of the hitsphere unless the AoE is larger than the size of the hitsphere.

This means if you get close enough so that the deptcharge drops on to the top of the sub, the sub takes no damage (complain to spring devs >_>).

This also means that janus-submarine, and many other submerged units, wont take damage if you forcefire on a above-surface portion of the hitsphere with a non-AoE weapon. (If the HLT laser, in the example, goes UNDER the water and hits the SUBMERGED portion of the hitsphere however- full damage!).
