extended characters were probably only denied for simplicity and such..
tis simple to increase the character set to even include unicode

Oh did I mention, Ive been on vacation, but now Im back, did we add unicode support to the deployed server? What other advances have been made?

Unicode support is a pretty bad idea...there are hundreds of characters that could be misused one way or another and it would be very difficult to find and blacklist all of them. Plus launching spring with unicode names in a battle would probably lead to bad things.

That.

On the other side, engine wise, there should be no problem with playernames as long as they:
  • are shorter than about 200 characters
  • don't have spaces inside
  • have only ascii characters

btw. why spaces is so big problem? i never got it why. (except that it may be hard to see how many spaces there are... though, that problem exists with _ mark too ;P)

Well, on the lobby side at least, the space character is used as the delimiter between command parameters in the protocol. Allowing spaces in a name is impossible without changing that fact.

Couldn't you make the actual names include the "_" but somehow remove it visually from sight?

the current protocol cannot support spaces in names.

How about some system where the names stay the same server wide, but you can have an option lobby side which shows all "_" in names as spaces instead.

right, because nobody uses _ as itself

we dont need spaces really, i like it without spaces... easier to say other players nicks too. plus, with spaces it wouldnt be possible to doubleclick the nick from chat to start PM window... makes it more clear when the nick ends etc.

About 99% of people only use _ because they can't use a space.

your statistic falls short on someone who uses _ as an underscore in his lobby username.
