The idea of having the default mapoptions providing lots of sliders sound nice to me.
And I agree with trepan about letting mappers disable that by providing their own MapOptions.lua.

I think mappers should be allowed to EXTEND default options only (call it "custom" options), not to replace them. So, default options should be perfectly universal to suit any map (to tweak params which every map has according to current architecture).

I added the capability to set SMD/SM3/LUA map parameters using
MapOptions.lua quite some time ago. There's even the beginnings
of the "default options" scripts in maphelper.sdz. I don't remember
how far I got with it, but you might want to take a look at
maphelper/mapinfo.lua, and how it uses the "defaultoptions" value
(from the SMD/SM3/LUA config file).
