There are NO valid reasons for a non-moderator to be using a second account (other than the reasons Swiftspear already listed, eg authosts, and perhaps as a one-time use to get the password on your main account reset).

Why not just rename your account? If you aren't a moderator, you cant tell one star account (or whatever rank you are) from another, and theres more than enough stars out there that no-one could possibly remember every single one.
I cannot think of a reason that any person would
NEED to have a 1 stripe account. Other than n00b-baiting, teamstacking and other disruptive activities, there is nothing that starting a new account can achieve that simply renaming cannot, other than what is listed below.
Lobby mods are the exception to this, and i can understand why they would wish to have anonymity in a game situation.

Its ridicules to discuss how to prevent smurfing with people who actually want it to continue.
AS i said,those that can do something about it don't care and those that care cant do anything about it.
There is nothing wrong with asking for email verification.
Commercial games do this and its not something that will stop people from registering to play spring.
If you forget your pass or username and etc u can try and recover it through email or talk to a moderator.
Name changing should also be validated through email so people will be discouraged to do it many times.
It only hurts the community anyway.
If moderators are suppose to ban smurfs why aren't they doing this?
Because it was not declared an officially bannable offense,or it as not done with enough zeal,and since they smurf as well they don't feel so committed to banning smurfs...

I think the best thing to do is to take your gold star/ vet star ( i know there are not many of those but whatever) and rename it to some random name, and make people guess who you are. People generally think that I am flopflop for example.

I made one smurf account for balancing purposes. I spec a lot of games (around half the time I'm ingame) because I dev. I don't consider myself a good enough player to be a goldstar paired up with a newb against two silver stars so I made a new account. I wasn't secretive about it. As you can see there are always reasons that you can't always think of when you're sitting there trying to list them off.
Regret has a point as well.

Smurfing is so prevalent that making it bannable and enforcing that rule would be extremely difficult.
Also, Gota, actions (and >20 accounts on your IP) speak louder than words.
Personally, I am not against smurfing provided it is not being used to disrupt gameplay, dodge hosts' bans or harass users.
edit: was at work and couldn't look up the actual number. I count 88.

This is a serious matter that concerns the entire community so you can make a few official announcements on the lobby at different times for a few days saying that from a certain date all caught smurfs will be banned.
What you wanna retain the option of mods smurfing?fine,that is acceptable.

Lets take a look at what would your suggestion bring:
- Less players
More drama
More people learning how use proxies to wreak havoc
A lot more work for moderators
False positives getting banned
Just to stop some occasional ruined game, which is quite rare, and I play several games a day with/against smurfs/newbs whatever.

To start, I don't think you should be looked at any different if you've made a smurf account, it says nothing about it in any of the polices I've looked at.
I often make smurfs so i can climb the rank ladder, again and again.
If you added all my smurfs together I'd be top rank by now, but i start new ones to actually have a purpose for wasting hours of my life
