I think you missed smoths point that he doesn't wanna fuck around with a bunch of obscure .txt config files and auxiliary programs and stuff for 2 hours just so he can set it up to play some game. Same reason linux tends to suck.

SMoth, you're making a mountain out of a molehill/ Dosbox with default settings is generally perfect for most games. As far as setting directories, just dump all your dos games in c:\dosgames

then in dosbox.conf add two lines at the end

mount c c:\dosgames
cd c:

And you're done. Now every time you start dosbox, your c: is your c:\dosgames directory.

cd mygamethatiwanttoplaytody
gameexecuteable.exe


@zpock, they aren't obcure, and there is only one you really ever would need to mess with. It's well commented and doesn't contain code, just settings.
