Heirarchies always fail - sub-categories always fall apart when people start arguing about which goes in what category. You want tagged data for things like models that have many orthogonal attributes. At the very least you want to be able to provide tags and the ability to quickly search by tag.

Agree with pxtl. I think it'd need to be a tailored site.
Maybe it could be tagged onto the hosting space of an established spring site as I expect it would get relatively little traffic, especially in terms of file downloads.

I recommend using Drupal - it's pretty good at letting you set up a site where you can provide a specific list of tags to the content-submitters that they can attach to their content. I used to run Quadropolis - they've done some really nice stuff with that site, which is a similar function made for the Cube/Sauerbraten FPS engine. It's based on Drupal, and even the base setup before they added the rating system and whatnot was pretty powerful - users would submit a node and add all the mandatory tags, description, screenshot, etc, and then it would go directly into the sectional page. Moderators could then promote it to the front page or kick it off the site. Any user could add comments, and so on. Very nice system. Now they've got new stuff that's cute like ratings systems so you can see the top-rated content and suchlike.

Thanks for the lead :)
Maybe I'll quietly ruminate on this, there doesn't seem to be overwhelming enthusiasm for it but I still like the idea.
