Yeah, but that was on 0.50b2 and for some unknown reason more people somehow preferred the translucent one, so I just didn't bother with making a new version. I'd still like to see them make it load all that info from an ini file of some sort, rather than having it hard coded, that way everyone could customize their own GUI...

And thats exactly what the new GUI code does, so will somebody get round to fixing the damned thing!

Good initiative Doomweaver!

1) Keep the build menu and the command menu seprated to avoid having to go through numerous menus in the heat of the battle.

2) Move the command menu to the bottom to the right of the statistics for three reasons: Firstly, you will avoid having to move the mouse from the left side to the right side of the screen when you want to build units and assign a command to it afterwards. This is important since this scenario takes place many times during the game!!! Secondly, moving the command menue to the bottom will make it possible to maximize the minimap by dragging it without overlapping/conflicting with the command menu. That is annoying for the moment. Thirdly, this will make the layout / battle screen view more rectanglar which is........ just more logic, Ithink :-)

Also, the unit pics should be squeezed together as much as possible. The same regarding the commands. We don´t need the buttons to tell RECLAIM or GUARD - lets just use a single letter like R for repair, Re for reclaim, G for Guard. We should save as much space for the battle field as possible. Small pics could also be used instead of text.

Hence the two tabs - one for the ones you actually do need, the other for the shortcut keys.

Agree Doomweaver.

What do you think of the rest I suggested - can you follow my argumentation for the placement of the command menue at the bottom close to the build menue?

Current (for comparison):

haha! Those images are only 210 kb each, at 1280x1024. Jpeg is pretty good, eh?

Does anyone think this layout is a good idea? Any suggestions? Feel free to post any comments.

Also, if we used this layout we wouldn't get rid of the old one, so don't flame me too much if you don't like it.
I like it, except that the unit icons are too far away from the actions menu. It will rapidly become annoying.
I like the black line around the icons, but I prefer having translucid background like it is now rather than solid grey background like in your picture.

I like especially the idea of popup menu and the unit icons appearing only when "build" is pressed. The menu should show only what is necessary.
Also, I think the menu should disappear completely and popup only when units are selected and the mouse goes over the left part of the screen, then disappear completely again as soon as the mouse quits that region.
This way, one sees more and there is less distraction.

Yeah exactly, Doomweaver.
Thats what I meant
We have to limit mouse movement as much as possible.

Okay, I guess the next step is to produce the graphics (for the commands.) I'll get started on this, any help would be apppreciated.

What resolution should the bar across the bottom be produced at?
1600x1200 (meaning 1600x63)?

There is some screens of how the new_gui currently looks if just someone would get around to fix the remaining bugs in it. Of course the look of it is customizable via some text files.

The corners of your graphics need to be transparent, but otherwise nice work. I surely hope those graphics are loaded from an hpi file, btw :)
