Nvidia chipsets are poo, and they likely wont be releasing any new ones after they get the ones they are currently finishing off out.

I had a 750i based motherboard once. It would randomly crash the entire system whenever videos were playing, and this was a common problem that took nvidia months to fix IIRC.

I know Im totally derailing this, but when I was working on my moms computer, it would randomly turn on whenever I put something into a PCI slot.
I just thought about that when people mentioned random reset on plugging in USB.

USB deal happens to me sometimes.

I thought 90% of my USBs failed, but I was wrong...

The stupid networking card has to be "installed" to a usb port. Then it only works and turns on for that port...

You are supposed to pull the plug before connecting any PCI devices by the way. About the USB wake, you generally can disable this in the BIOS settings in the Wake On ... section. Pity it doesn't work for me, my mainboard came with a silly remote to turn the comp on (through a USB device).

It's possible though, I once installed a PCI NIC into a running PC and it's still proper fine today.

You can totally hose a motherboard, keeping power to it while plugging in anything to the bus! Always remove the power entirely (pull the plug) and discharge your own static electrical charge (touch something metal that's grounded) before doing computer repairs. Seriously... it's not worth screwing up an expensive collection of hardware, to save 30 seconds...

OTOH a static discharge that has nowhere to go may also have fatal consequences, so pulling the plug is not always the best option. I usually save time by switching the PSU off; I always wondered why some PSUs don't have a kill switch.

keep it plugged in but turn the switch off so its just the grounding
