tbh the whole green thing at the consumer level is not about saving our power usage by reducing consumption for us, its about adding another feature to the feature list to market.

Either way we'll see the benefits of these cpus wether we want them or not because all cpus are moving in this direction anyway.

Im also astounded that nobody figured out that more power == more heat. Your all supposed to be overclockers yet you managed to gloss over this lol =p

I'd rather shut my PC down than putting it in standby mode, even if that wears the hardware off.

I just have added that little laptop-style power-doodad in the system-tray and have it set up for agressive auto-hibernation - the icon gives you a 2-click switch to always-on if I don't want it to auto-hibernate. It's only got 768 megs of RAM so it hibernates/wakes quickly. Try hibernating your machine and see how quickly it goes - if so, you could do the same. No worries about turning it on or off or wondering how much power it drains while sleeping.

You've got a good point there, you do... I'll have to do when noone's watching and then take the credit for it later when people realize what a hero I really am.

Please enlighten me.
Forboding Angel wrote:No downside to going green? I fail to see how if a company spent all that money for no other reason than "Going Green". If they updated and went green in the process then that's all fine and good, however if you think companies should be forced to "Go Green" before they need to upgrade equipment, then you have one too many holes in your head.
What is this straw man? I never suggested that a company should replace their entire infrastructure based on the current power consumption.

What I am suggesting is that organisations are factoring in their power consumption when upgrading. As a result, the major manufacturers are putting effort into providing solutions that meet this hardware requirement.

If you want proof of this, have a look at what IBM are doing.

At the very consumer end, manufacturers are responding to an increased consumer interest in their environmental footprint and are heavily marketing their green solutions. The 'green hype' is all a bit gimmicky but it is actually significantly to enthusiasts advantage. The relationship between increases in power and increases in performance is like a decay function. All the significant gains in performance in computing necessarily have to come from significant improvements in power consumption. Reforms in power efficiency is at the very core of the success the core-duo architecture, for example. The push to power efficiency long proceeds the current consumer marketing.

On a business level this philosophy is a fallacy of totally rationalised economics. If you want to have a look at why a lack of social consciousness ultimately is to a businesses detriment, wikki Nestle and have a look at how much shit they got in (baby milk saga in particular).

On a personal level, the philosophy makes you selfish. Hey that's fine with me, it means you cant complain when you get fucked over by someone else's selfishness though.

If you are solely attributing that philosophy to environmental responsibility then you are being arbitrary and unprincipled.

Don't worry. I don't. I actually enjoy a good debate; de-constructing and constructing arguments.

Wasting power on generating excess heat and a bigger bill sure makes a hell of a lot of sense...

I somewhat agree with the OP, though. Too many hippies around these days, branding this normal technological refinement trend (more computing power, less power drain, efficiency in general) as "green computing".

Common sense is going extinct. :(

How does the koolade taste? I said that you should enjoy life to it's fullest and not buy into the mass hysteria that the world is going to end in your lifetime or your children's lifetimes so gtf over it.

You buy into this crap because you have to feel important, like you mean something to the world. Well guess what, you are an insignificant spec of humanity in a world that is much bigger than you. You have the AUDACITY to think that something that you do personally can change the ENTIRE world (I'm talking about nature, for clarification). You actually think that humans (who if all put standing next to each other, barely take op any room at all on this planet) actually have the ability through normal living to grease off this planet.

Where did you leave your common sense? I'm guessing product of government education.

And yet I'M selfish when I tell you to enjoy YOUR life and do what YOU want to do with YOUR life while ENJOYING life to it's fullest instead of worrying all the time. Course you know what? If worrying makes you feel so unique, individualistic, and damn important, go ahead, live your life in constant fear and relative misery. While you're doing that, I will be enjoying mine.

Remember global warming was gonna end the world 6 months ago? Oh wait, then we had a small ice age for a winter, now all of a sudden "Oh, we're in a 10 year cooling cycle." Open your damn eyes and THINK FOR YOURSELF FOR ONCE.

Below is a pictorial of the weather stations in california used to measure global warming. These weather stations are supposed to be surrounded by at least 500 feet of nothing but nature (grass basically), so that the readings are not affected/effected by radiant heat.

I especially like the one that is situated directly next to jet tailpipes.

BTW, in the 80's, global cooling was going to kill us all. All these people have done is prove that they have no REAL understanding of how the "Earf" takes care of itself.

Your atmosphere gas concentrations are incorrect. It's about 80% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen, 1% Argon, .04% Carbon Dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases.

Enjoying your life is a good suggestion, but being educated on whatever topic you're presenting your opinion on and hopefully are somewhat interested (even if it's only to debunk it as being senseless) in if your looking into it makes you appear to be more credible in your area. Being educated and actually thinking about the topic makes you more credible.

From what I know of global warming, it's a natural process that alternates between cooling and warming in which major storms are used to clean up the atmosphere so to speak. There is evidence that humans are speeding up the process of global warming and making the hole in the ozone layer larger. I think that, if possible, it would be a nice idea if, as an individual, to try and not add to pollution. However it is very optimistic to think that you will be able to get everyone to do that all the time. Supporting the cause is alright. Some people like to use global warming as part of the reason reason why they should keep their cities clean. Personally, I think that disease would be a better reason, but whatever.

Caydr wrote:Is for morons. The whole notion of saving 30 watts on a "green" cpu or 20 watts for a "green" gpu, or hell, anything for saving anything, is retarded and made of fail and ipods.

You aren't saving anything. Your computer might go from 500 watts to 450 watts. Hell let's say it goes down to 2 watts power consumption, you're still saving something like 13 cents a month. Don't be such damn cheap hippies.

Even if it was $10 a month - which it isn't - that's below the threshold of "who gives a damn" for anyone that has a job - and if you don't have a job you're a hippy with no computer so you don't matter. I gave a kid on a bus $10 to shut up, best $10 I ever spent, and I'll see if he's interested in a monthly "shutting up" subscription fee next time I see him. I'm going to go order a pizza and throw it away as soon as it gets here just to offset your cheapness.

Besides my infallible argument above, it's the same deal as with hybrid cars: for the higher cost of purchase you have to drive them 6 years before you even break even, and by then there'll be better alternatives.

A'course, there'll never be a better alternative with PCs, because the savings will always be so minimal you're a twit if you think you're saving anything at all.

And why the heck is Firefox saying "there'll" isn't a word?
lol

@panda - the Ozone thing is dated. Evidence shows that the CFC ban had a substantial impact and the ozone hole is shrinking.

I think that if man-made global warming is real, then we have already screwed ourselfes for a few centuries, time during wich we will probally either invent a solution or explode the planet, so nothing to worry about :)

Hi, I'm tombom, and whatever Al Gore says is truth, you dig?

Watching "An inconventient truth" does not make you educated...

Let me put it in a more down to "Earf" sort of way... WHen was the last time your local weatherman was right? If we can't predict the climate on a day to day basis, then how exactly can we so "accurately" depict what will happen in 50 years?

Remember, if Gore is right, then in 2012 it's all over anyway.

i've never watched an inconvenient truth and i realise he makes some exaggerations but the idea that humans are causing global climate change is accepted by the vast majority of scientists soooo i'd prefer to accept them over the views of somebody whose only proof is "al gore lol" and "i amr ight"

I'd heard that it was stable, but didn't hear anything about it shrinking. Do you have a science article on this? It's good that it's not getting any worse since the CFC ban.
