I'm still trying to do low-cost advertising, but I have to say, it is a dauntingly difficult task.

Basicly your saying that commercial games are wasting million on millons on marketing their games.
They should just release them and slowly wordofmouth will sell them.
Seriously how can toy write such a massage?is your purpose to just argue?if so please post some real arguments.

Word of mouth doesn't sell anything. Alright, so I got maybe 50 in a year.

Get it reviewed on game sites, listed on top xx free games lists, posted on other gaming forums. Stuff like that is where the casual gamers will find it. But you may want to make it a bit easier to install, setup, and starting playing first, or you'll lose most people before they even get into it to see how good it is.

More people visit thissite per week get turned off and never come back than there are people in the lobby. Imagine if we raised our retention rates.

Its not that nobody knows we exist, its that those who do come here tend to close their browser tab in disgust.

Actually the site is pretty medicore. It's not terrible but it seems better suited to some other source project, like a filesystem or something.

This is a pretty accurate, insightful essay. Simply promoting Spring isn't going to do anything if it is still hard to use. Also, Spring needs to have an easy to use skirmish AI for BA / CA / XTA "right out of the box" so that people can play by themselves since a lot of people apparently don't enjoy multiplayer.

A proper documented "Getting Started" guide included with the installer would go a long way. Maybe an HTML manual that explains the various mods, the units in the various mods, what settings are, and how to play too.

All that relates to ai,and the way to start your first game are installer, lobby problems.
Its all not outomated enough, and things always need to be tweaked in order to play, that is of course fail.
The tasclient if tweaked correctly can become easy to use and can guide players to their first game.
Would be excellent if the lobby could pop up a small cloud that will go with the player throug hal lthe steps explaining everything.
Just from the point the lobby is open.

Make the said cloud. Do something rather than giving empty suggestions.
