SWTA infantry (1.0...) were pretty useful all game in my oppinion. as the empire you could crank a huge force into those transport gunships, fight over the defence and drop a huge swarm of cheap spam into the enemy base. they also had crazy numbers for low cost that could swamp tanks and the like.
as the rebels you had the hover transport that meant you could quickly plop down a huge number of weapons at the front. the rebels had the way of it because of their AP rocket launcher guy who was cost effective to the millionth degree. a line of them behind some spam would stop everything.
even though tanks would appear and air made everything else redundant, infantry were still cool.
in s44 atm infantry are very realistic and function in squads, but they do all tend to get mowed down when you advance, resulting in just tanks pushing foward and then the delay for the infantry to catch up and make flags that is indeed annoying. the ability to cloak when stationary and go prone makes infantry very effective on the defensive for laying ambushes and the like
