If you do not mind a lack of DX10 (Which is worthless at the moment imo) a Geforce 7950 is a very good card. Its the high end of last generation and is still quite decent at many of todays games. I have the 256Mb version and can run games like UT3 at nearly max settings. They also make a 512Mb version. On Newegg they have them for $180 to $190 depending on the version.

If you want the current high end, the 8800 GT is the best buy and you can get $200 to $300 on Newegg. For a motherboard some good ones come from MSI, Asus and Gigabyte. I personally got a MSI Neo2-FR for around $100 on newegg.

Nah, the card runs other games quite nicely too... Not 'better' than an equivalent 8xxx series card, but since when should a previous generation beat a future?

It's the same phenomena from the 5xxx series, the previous generation beat them out in most cases for the money spent.

On Biostar mobos: Enjoy having to replace your mobo next year , just hope it doesn't take any expensive components with it.

I just got a Intel Pentium D 925 Processor 3.0Gz Duel core and exchanged my 8500 GT 256MB for a 7300 GT 512MB

This is a real upgrade from my Celeron 3.2Gz
I don't think I'm losing a lot by downgrading video cards

My gamer sense instantly dislikes the video card downgrade... but personally I'd never buy a video card for myself that didn't have at least a 6 for the second model didget (x6xx).

You're correct that it's a major upgrade from the celeron, but a hampster running in a wheel is also a major upgrade from the celeron. You'd probably still be better off with and athy 64x2 than that pentium in performance vs cost.

The althalons can't beat the core2s, but they still destroy Pentiums.

[edit] if you don't mind waiting a little while longer, why not just post your budget, the location you're buying from, and what components you are trying to replace/keep, and let us see if we can come up with a good solution...

I told rcdraco this too. Again, Supreme Commander benchmark.

At time of writing the Athlon 64x2 4600+ is ~$80 and the Pentium D is about ~$100. Yet the Athlon far outperforms the Pentium D. It's not all about the clock rate. Below ~$150, get an Athlon 64x2. Above, get a Core 2 Duo.

I would have to get change my motherboard to get a AMD.
I spent $80 on this cpu and $70 on the video card

I could take back the video card and get a Core2Duo for $120 2.2Ghz
Then I won't be able to pay anything for a while

All I wanted to do was to play Supcom on low for a few months until it comes out for 360 in FEB

Thumbs up. The P3 is decent, not great but decent, but the 7600 is high quality.
