The Tank looks nice, same for the drone. You could increase the detail a bit. You can simple use for big units like the tank 500 Polys or more.

I don´t like a shotgun at Starcraft like tank. A MG / Gatlinggun or a Metal Storm would be better. We could make a tech 1 tank with out siege mode and only with the tank gun from Starcraft. Then a tech 2 tank or a research that gives the ability to siege the tank. And some researches for extra weapons at the tank or a new tech level.

Currently I´m working at the Zergling, here is a screenshot:
Image

First I did a 2d model based on a concept: Image

Then I duplicated the 2d models and connected all together.

Edit: I will do for each unit which is shown in the concept a model.
And I found a design error at the front of the zergling.

for the record, that is 175 polies. small detail can easily go into the texture

Neatdo, But please keep in mind that we are both extreemly new to trying to make things, and I so far am still confused.

Plus Floaty units don't need wheels so that use less polys. :D thinking of that I most likely need to clean up all of them that I will do.

Just beware! Newbie skillz of high poly count and laaagggg....

People's creativity has been living in a post-copyright world for a few years now.

This will be not a clone.

@Snipawolf: Do you mean I should change the view to perspective view?

you might want to change the names and not use starcraft artwork as a basis. Blizzard is known to shut down projects that use their trademarks without legal support.

:!: What JC states is 100% true. Do not go there, people. Blizzard is very hostile towards people trying to steal their IP. Name the Zerg the "brood", give them unique art (there have to be about a bazillion Alien ripoffs out there to steal design ideas from, c'mon people), etc., etc. Blizzard can't shut you down, for borrowing their game-design ideas, but they can sure do it for stealing their art. Don't go there.

If you're not going for a faithful port, then change the mod name and the unit. Well, even if you do go a faithful port, you'd better change the names anyway to avoid legal issues (unlike Atari, Blizzard do send lawyer's letters to mod maker using their IP) However, I understand that if you label your mod "Starcraft", then a lot more people will get interested in it than if you name it, for instance "PZVT5".

A good middle-way would be to give it a name that is reminiscent of Starcraft without being exactly it (I dunno, something like "SunVessel" or "NovaSkill"). And to draw inspiration from SC units but without copying them and without staying limited to them.

I just hate orthographic.

Listen to these guys, though, blizzard is a bitch when it comes to stealing artwork.

Just steal the general concept, but make sure nothing is the same as starcraft

After some researches on wkikpedia I found out that the name Zerg comes from a Norse mythology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology and here it is written: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydralisk
If this is true, some names could be used because Blizzard can not take copyrights for names from a mythology.

Basically we should not use the name Starcraft. And it was not my plan to call the mod Starcraft. Zerg is not copyrighted, same for Terran or Terraner. Zergling, too.

I´m not a person who knows much about copyrights but Blizzard can not copyrighted all names of Starcraft.

Edit: And look at youtube.com there are many videos based on Starcraft.
Edit02:
Take a look at moddb.com there are starcraft based mods.

Instead of 'Star' use 'Celestial Body' hence call it "CelestialBodyCraft" :P
