Let me summarize this thread for you:
"hay guys on the internet who care SO VERY DEEPLY ABOUT EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE I have 100 hours of gameplay k thx bye"
What on earth possessed you to post this in General Discussion?

If you don't like it, spam the topic, it's an easy way to get it locked.

Hum? Im not trying to call attention to myself... im trying to show people that if the ranking system of spring is lame to the point of allowing me to get to max rank, it probaly needs changes.

But what you've really done is demonstrate what everyone already knows, i.e. that the Spring ranking system is pretty much irrelevant. Rather, it already does what it is intended to do - provide a basic measure of experience - and it does not do what some people apparently think it is intended to do - something other than provide a basic measure of experience.

Crap. "I am a star". I was afraid this was going to be bad poetry.

If you want to make a thread about how the ranking system sucks, don't title it "i am a star". It's like posting in a thread about relationships saying "MY HOT GIRLFRIEND LIKES PLAYING VIDEOGAMES". It looked like a typical forums showboat thread someone posted to get their ego stroked, profile raised, and post count increased. Anyway, I think 100 hours of ingame time is plenty to award the highest Spring rank, especially since there's no real way to award ranks based on Wins, win/loss percentages, etc.

There's plenty of real ways to award ranks based on wins, win/loss percentages, ratings, and the like.

The problem is that it seems that the consensus (with which I concur) is that so-called "skill-based ranking" is not the direction that we want to go in.

Skill-based ranking doesn't measure anything accurately enough for me to support it. I agree with Lathan and Felix.

Problems with skill based ranking:

1. Technical issues: Right now the game and client (Or lobby) can't pass data back and forth. If the client can't report wins/losses to the lobby there'd be no way to rank based on wins & losses.

2. Implementation issues: Win loss ratios are almost as easily "gamed" to increase rank as our current time based ranking. It'd be easy to make throw away accounts, or collude with your buddies so your games didn't affect the rank. The next part is even stickier, how do you rank on win loss? It would have to be on a per mod basis to make any sense. Just because someone has a great win loss ranking in BA doesn't make them great at Nanoblobs. It'd also have to matter on a version by version basis since some mods balance has changed a lot between versions, like when AA became all about spamming weasels. The problem with a mod based ranking then becomes what rank to display when in chat? And we'd have to use CRCs or hashes to verify the mod that people are playing for rank is unaltered.

Seriously, I know the ranking system as it is sucks for "professional gamers" or whatever, but anything else won't be that much of an improvement. All the current ranking system signifies is that you are not a newbie, and that's probably all we really need. You know if you get in a game of all stars that hopefully no one will be asking dumb questions about how to play. If you're looking for a system to show of your skills, start or join a league. We could even award titles or custom icons for league champions or something.

Quite simple: Developer time is finite. We'd much rather have the long awaited resync fix or mod features rather than some worthless "powergamer" feature so that people can show off on the internet, in hope of strengthening their position in the herd to attract mates. (Jokes on them, everyone knows there's less than 10 chicks that play Spring)

As far as possibly implementing a title system based on league results or something, that'd have to probably get approval from Betalord then implemented by him or by a patch from someone, and we'd also have to have a league running for a few months to make sure it could last into the long term. I'd suggest if you are really into a titling system, start up a bad ass league now which will make it that much easier to ask for titles once the first "season" or whatever is done. You'll need to decide on mods played, rules, map cycle, etc so there is a lot of work to be done before we can even start thinking about implementing titles. Good luck.

My first game (of my second tour of playing spring) was vs a star on c2c, and I wipped him. That star still plays but he's not very good I now realize. :P
