non symetrical atmosphereic aircraft dont work.. due to obvious physics problems...
Touche ;)

And for a more academic treatment...

ok touche.. but were any of those aircraft actually useful/effective compared to symetrical aircraft...

Also, if it's a gunship-type aircraft, it uses some sort of antigravity, rather than the Brenoulli principle to keep it aloft, so it can be as lopsided as you want ;)

Fang:

I dunno, honestly. NASA and DARPA keep messing around with these concepts, though, which suggests that there must be something to it. And the experimental-plane world, over the last few years, has been building quite a few of these things. I don't know whether that really says anything for their ultimate utility, though.

Wow, this thread has some serious talent. I think Lathan takes the cake, although rattle/fang/mr.d's were all really impressive. TBH argh's looks more like a missile to me than a bomber/figher/gunship. This thread makes me want to find my old 3dsmax cd.

Yeah that thing was awefully designed.

Typical, I moddeled somthing that already existed from a game I don't own, and played once around a friends house... NOOOOOOooooooo.....

Non-symmetrical VTOLs should work rather well and they are eyecatchers (in my opinion). Symmetrical models all the time can get quite boring, though they're easier to UV map.

GINTA needs a fighter plane anyway (though it will end up looking kinda 20th century, without design guidelines you have to be prepared for anything from steampunk to absolute realism, if you want a specific style put it into the contest rules) and that thing will carry only four missiles which makes it easier to stay in the poly limit.

And um why use obj when you can use s3o instead?
Almost overread that. Try exporting s3os as obj or 3ds and reimport it into wings.

My second entry. I started off an old floppy disk container and somehow it turned into a fish like bomber thing, I still think a cannon opening at the bottom would be cool.

Either make the inset effect "broader" of the cannon opening because it goes unnoticed right now, or remove it entirely because it's 16 tris wasted. By remove I mean use the inset effect once and move it inside on the z-axis (or what ever axis goes inside).

It wasn't a cannon, it was intake, so I decided it would look better as a textured grate.

Yes I see your point but especially on the back engines I thought it looked terrible with just one inset

It is ugly and looks like a box

What I meant was using inset once and then move it in on the z-axis. The small border goes (almost) unnoticed and is a waste of 16 triangles :)
Same for the exhausts.

I dont disagree that asymetrical aircraft are possible.. However until I see evidence to otherwise they would seem impractical and would likely imo be out preformed by symetrical traditional aircraft..

They are merely a curiosity I believe.. though far be it for us to say spacecraft have to be symetrical.. but it helps for anything moving through some sort of a fluid enviroment I believe..

I think that its important to remember that in a vidio game, if it looks cool...it works.

Also, no offence diggz, but that looks like a box with guns nailed to the side. A little...clunky, you know. Not that I could do much better, so there's me being a hypocrate for you.

Whatever.

Fang, whoever else is involved with the symetrical/asymetrical plane stuff, could ya take it to P.M.
Kinda off topic ya know..

edit: I think the wings are going to be ~270 polies.. I got 1/3 of one done and its already 70

Why's it off-topic?

Fang: well imagine a VTOL plane, body's in the middle, one fan in the lower left, the other in the top right section and the "empty" top left and lower right spots are small platforms for gun-emplacements. Thrusters and body are going to be symmetrical again, wings are attached to the fan sections.
Of course it's not everyone's beer. Anyway, it was just an idea which was floating in my head.

How's everybody doing? And when does the timelimit expire? 12 am GMT today? It's the 23rd already in GMT+2.
I almost finished both now. Had to reduce polys again because I forgot to cut that huge not so aerodynamic thing into halves and still need to do some weaponry for the Tornado.

Whaat? Its already the 23rd? I have 6 hours and 30 minutes til then!

Well... I had another atempt... This is even more what I wanted originaly... sleeker, more sexy. What do you think? Have I got better since the last one? Or is this worse?
