I wonder if it's at all possible to make a program that would allow skinning models with the "spraypaint" approach, just spray color over the model, slap 'decals' on it, and save the resulting texturemap. If you think it's impossible, look at Street Legal Redline, the garage there is a very good example of spraypaint model texturing. You just literally select a brush, a color, and just paint anything you like anywhere. Plus you can make custom decals that aren't simply added as an overlay to the model, but instead are directly applied to the texture.
This wouldn't take away the need to UVmap the model yourself, nor would it completely replace the common "create-a-texture-and-fit-the-map-to-it" way of skinning, because certain things would be more difficult to achieve that way, like accurately placing small details.
I'm pretty sure it's very possible to make an app like this for Spring, because even the BlitzBasic environment has a simple model-painting example in the samples section.

yea, that would be awesome instead of all the other stuff, much faster and easier, and small details depends cuz you shouldn't be too close to your units in game, or you will lose

I think you still missed this :P
Have the turret sit upon a visible hull bulge of some kind, it's currently sunk between the tracks, so it doesn't look like it can turn.

Looking better and better, way to go
all the small cannons (triple cannons and nipples) can have 3 sides with zero loss of detail. ingame no one will zoom that far in. Also the main turret is too round and tall, real tanks have them longer in lenght and shorter in height.

krogothe, sure I guess, hehe I already have one that is MUCH more changed than that one

Oh and those are gatlings, not triple cannons

And eventually, in the mod there will be triple cannons, heheh

Ahhh, those spikes might serve something other than being goblins, heheheh

Well, you know. I don't mind helping you guys but come on. It is not that hard for you. Google for it. You guys have to start thinking for yourselves.

Wow, I actually found a freeware program that allows to do what I wanted. It's called Tattoo, written (surprisingly) in Blitz Basic (see I told you BB has that functionality!), and can be found here. It's not exactly a great tool, because it's rather unstable, slow and glitchy sometimes, but it does allow to paint your model with whatever you need. A professional tool of the same kind - Deep Paint 3D - costs around 350$, so Tattoo is the best thing you can get for free. ...legally that is.

edit: Deep Paint 3D is actually a lot more useful... and faster and less buggy to boot. And it can also paint in bump, alpha and shinyness layers at once, and even render the results right away. :D If it didn't cost so much it would be a good tool.
