My feature placement mod project was supposed to be able to do that but I never got anywhere with ti after i realized I had to turn every feature into a unit for it to show up in the build menu....

Instead someone needs to write a lua widget that exports all the features on a map to a gaia lua script

That was planned in AFLobby. The spring lobby people prioritized it however and managed to get searching UF for a file 95% accurate. They intended to eventually figure out how to check if only 1 result was gotten and auto pick the link doing exactly what you said.

A simple solution that would make our jobs a lot easier however would be for UF to open that 1 result by default automatically skippign the search page entirely.

i agree 100%, it should search for the exact name of the map or mod, and would take you right to the d/l page unless there's a map or mod with additional characters (ie, click tangerine, it searches for tangerine but finds tangerine and tangerine norocks)

that needs to be changed on UF's end -- >>if the search result yields only one map it should just take you to it's DL page.<< cuppy take note pls!!!!!!!!!!

and then the auto install is already done and needs to be in the next version fa sho, so there's not much work really, is there? and this will make spring 10,000% easier for noobs to d/l and play

Thats why I think more sophisticated system for resource discovery is needed. You can have several mods or maps with exactly same name and each different in reality..

And Iamacup - I think that integrated lobby downloads from mirror servers like UF should display ads (from that server).

TheBigPK wrote:I really think the in game UI needs a bit of a makeover. It looks like the game is still in testing and despite the widgets and such it seems kind of thrown together with no overall scheme besides err semitransparent boxes... thats the most noticeably bad thing for me as I pretty much just screw around on single player.
This complaint I also get from new users. We should poke meltrax to actually develop IceUI some more >_>

imbaczek wrote:solution is easy: do not bundle anything. after installation, send users directly to UF's spring mods section.
And people would be like "WTF what do i do now, what mods do i download now, what the hell im doing here!? *closes window* *uninstalls*"

It would be cool if we could make an online installer, ie. one that downloads the selected mods from somewhere as opposed to including them.

This way it would be cheap to "add" most major mods to the installer without bloating it, so no one could complain about bloated installer size (plus it wouldn't take insane amount of time to generate installer). Additionally the mods could be updated independently of the installer provided the filename stays the same (so always the latest version of the mod is in the full installer). Of course we could still ship an offline installer with one mod or no mods at all.

There is already an NSIS installer plugin that can download content from the net.

imo any bundled content with spring should be more of a small mini game than a full blown game. Something like H4x or a cut down kernel panic. Something to serve as a basic example.

KP would be IMHO great, it's got a small footprint (especially in the maps department), it's free of Atari content, it's fun. If only NTAI didn't have such bad hiccups.

I think an avarage Joe doesn't want to download an "engine", he wants to download and play a game. Only programmers care about engines. For users it should be as simple as possible - one big download button which downloads the game which they can start playing right away.
Having it bundled with some "basic example" game will only turn them away as most of the people won't bother investigating all the mods and figuring out which is the best etc.

Regarding some lobby improvements - for tips and ideas check world in conflict demo or supcom. It has some nice ideas and it's really easy to use. It's easy to join a clan, start a clan match, join a game with friend etc..

A tutorial is all we need to get Spring back on track, trust me. Maybe one could be included in the download package on the Spring site and the first time someone starts the client, a little window will open saying: "Would you like to run the Spring tutorial?" An added bonus would be that there won't be so many "how the F*** do i use D-gun?" newbies around.

I want a Bot waiting in the Lobby offering 3x every new joined Player a Tutorial, a warm Welcome, a Dl-Link, A help how to use the lobby and i want that all in a private Message.. and a Good Drink of Course... P(R)ost....

And Advertising.. well just start it.. this is OS- you never get them all under a hat... just mention that it is a really steep learning curve, that you have to live with the lot you got

(this includes Programs-> PS: AF i am still waiting for Proof(e.g Emails) that for Example Betalord is aboslutly not willing to cooperate, accept better pieces of Code (for example YourLobby etc.) and has no sense for diplomacy ;) Until that proof is posted

so if Advertising, do it like the cigarettindustry in Europe.. Big Warning Sign on the Bottom:

"Spring is tough, ´re you good `nough?"
This is a NoteasyforNoobs-Product and it can cause seriously healthdamage to your nervesystem!
