Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
EDIT: adjusted thread title to assign blame where blame is due. Individual autohost owners can no longer be held responsible.
Thread reverted to original title. Make a new thread with a new title if you need one, don't break search for old threads. (Silentwings)
Attention hosters!
There are now 9 autohosts running non-downloadable maintenance engines (see https://springrts.com/dl/buildbot/default/maintenance/) and there have now been multiple complains in #newbies about not being able to download.
Above blue line: Please fix it.

Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
who controls the BA hosts?
This really is a problem.
This really is a problem.
Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
It seems that FabriceFABS and someone named "Great" run the problematic autohosts
Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
Fabrice (seems) absent – he's occassionally around but not often. It may be wise to advise that he stops hosting BA, since they aren't used anymore.
Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
maybe they aren't being used because people can't play there?
having so many broken hosts is a PR disaster..

Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
I didn't know this. Thanks for pointing it out.
I'm a little reticent to shut down someone else's hosts without communicating them … especially being the only BA hosts. 2 of them seem to be used semi-regularly. I've reached out to Fabrice via discord and his [ACE] site. I'd prefer to give him e.g. a week before taking any action myself.
Would also feel a lot better about this if BA hadn't switched servers. Hopefully one day we can work something out so they can come back. :)

Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
Mummy zerok and daddy ba love you all very much. They just need some alone time to work out there controllisimo and the retro engine fetish. Soon they will all get together and everything will be just fine.

Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
Kloot has been fixing several issues per week, but it's hard to know which builds to use.FabriceFABS wrote: ↑06 Sep 2019, 16:22Thx MasterBel
@raaar : I found it's the most recent that got Win64 engine archive available (Complete with Linux32/64, & Win32).
Maybe it's useless, I don't know...
This is troublesome. So people may not be able to play games due to various problems:
- maintenance builds not downloadable through spring web lobby
- engine builds may lack certain targets, for example 1381 doesn't have windows builds at all!
- there was a bug with the hashes for downloaded files that was causing some people to be unsynced on battle rooms despite having all the required stuff (this). It was only fixed on 1378 or so.
- hosts with engine builds no longer available are still there

Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
Maybe you don't know but in your engine directory, once the archive extracted, you have to rename the directory like this for instance :
Code: Select all
104.0.1-1370-gf0d7219 develop
And the lastest ENG, so... is ok ?
Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
Common_Server and Metal_Server still run the same engine version as a month ago. I think it is fair to say that they are abandoned and thus someone should step in and pull the plug.
Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
Closely related would be hosts hosting development versions. I think for the sake of the average user, these test hosts should be hidden – and an option added to preferences (or something) in SL for them to be shown. Would require an extra flag added to the lobby battle protocol, and changes to host clients to flag hosts as testing/development hosts.
All in favour? Can anyone think of a better solution?

Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
The issue persists and inaction continues.
So far I'm password-protecting my hosts if I know that they run broken stuff. This does not stop newbies from downloading and running these versions, but it does prevent them from joining and downloading that way.
The problem with this is that most of the matches are played on hosts hosting development versions, either of the game or engine (or both). Hiding these would make the lobby even deader.MasterBel wrote: ↑24 Sep 2019, 22:58 Closely related would be hosts hosting development versions. Re: Autohosts operating non-downloadable engines
Another 8 of the hosted engines fell off the build server, and another (old) newbie + me wasted time debugging this.
Now there are 10 such hosts. In other words, 22% of all hosts offer games on engines that cannot be downloaded. Good job!
