TASClient? Facebook Cross-Domain Messaging helper-springinfo

Post by klapmongool »

Since a couple of weeks sometimes 3 tabs open in firefox, when i'm already in firefox.

https://www.facebook.com/connect/ping?c ... e&sdk=joey

For some reason this link, and 2 others with a url like: http://static.ak.facebook.com/connect/x ... cetcetcetc and the text: 'SECURITY WARNING: Please treat the URL above as you would your password and do not share it with anyone.' appear in browser tabs regularly.

Does anyone have any idea what springinfo.info is doing in there? I don't have it bookmarked or anything. I have my browser set to delete all history, cookies, links, etc on closing the browser. The only Spring related bookmark I have is springrts.com/phpbb. I don't have bookmarks for anything related to facebook. I don't have any programs installed that have anything to do with facebook.

I can't find anything useful on the internet about 'Facebook Cross-Domain Messaging helper'.

Virus scanner doesn't find anything.

potentially TASClient related?

[05:38:34] <Zeether> TASClient
[05:38:52] <[2up]knorke> in springlobby settings you can set paths to engine and content
[05:39:00] <Zeether> but that client opens up some random websites upon opening which was a bit skeevy
[05:39:03] <[2up]knorke> hm or just use TASClient, if that works for you?
[05:39:21] <Zeether> okay, now it shows the game and maps
[05:39:23] <Zeether> weird
[05:39:33] <[2up]knorke> maybe just needed time to cache
[05:39:40] <[2up]knorke> tasclient is legit client by the way
[05:39:57] <[2up]knorke> not sure what pages it opens, maybe some readmes or spring news or something
[05:42:16] <Zeether> it tried to open facebook in like 3 tabs in firefox
[05:43:31] <[2up]knorke> link?
[05:44:36] <Zeether> it opened pages labeled "Facebook Cross-Domain Messaging helper"

O_O This is madness. TASClient still (afaik, and I have looked and asked several times now) has no project page or bugtracker and now it's redirecting people to apparently random websites that give security warnings ... is this really a good idea?

Is TASClient still maintained?
Afterall it is not in official spring download anymore.
I think it is only old spring-players still downloading if from (somewhere) or they still have their original installs...

From this posts it seems like Satirik has stopped development:

I've also asked this several times and had no answer, although I have occasionally heard players claiming they recieved an update, with no idea who or where it came from.

That post is from 2008.

Version 0.95 of TC was released in mar 2012:

http://springfiles.com/spring/lobby-cli ... s-client-0

It autoupdates itself to 1.05, which was released I think in December.

The description reads: "Latest version of TAS Client that i have."

Seems like an official release and more like a player uploading his TASClient-version that he still had on HDD?

Also interessting the comment: "setting.exe not find what it"
I assume it means springsettings.exe, which was also removed from spring installer.
And so players are sharing that too: http://springfiles.com/spring/tools/springsettings to make it work with TASClient?
Not good situation..
If there is maintainer please come forward. If not, these files should be deleted or get a BIG warning, they were removed from installer for a reason.

The cross scripting is bad, it also happened to ismo. But I think it's maybe related to the news banner. You you can remode the news banner from
Options->Lobby Options->Interface->Disable news (requires restart)

Don't remove tasclient alltogether, it's still the best looking lobby. I think 80% of XTA people use Tasclient.

Don't remove tasclient alltogether
It already was removed years ago.
Excactly because of threads like this one, where there was no support. If you want to keep using it then understand that nobody will provide support and that it is unofficial.
It is just people are reuploading it.
To any sort of problems you have with a spring install that uses such lobby there is only one answer: "Well, you are using unsupported lobby. There could be all kind of problems."
And to new players that must be made clear, too.

Weird. I have said in multiple threads that TASclient has been getting regular updates. Yet every time TASclient is being discussed a bunch of people, who clearly don't use it, keep referring to some old thread from which they derive it is not being maintained.

Is there some auto-version-update mechanism in place i don't know about?

@Secret maintainer: great lobby, keep up the good work!

@Jools, thanks for the solution!

klapmongool, that old thread is last life sign of TASClient dev I could find.

I think "secret maintainer" is not so good way for OS project.
Of course does not have to be superactive on forum, but at least knowing who it is and responding to threads would be good.

Otherwise no wonder it looks dead and was removed. Maybe there are updates, but: Do you know where they come from?
Worst case scenario someone has hijacked the updater and is using it to spread malware. Yes, silly assumption and sorry to maintainer, if he exists, but can one really be sure?

On 2 from 3 svn links are dead.
http://springrts.com/wiki/Lobby_Development#TASClient
The working one contains readme with "UPDATED: 10 Sep 2009"

Can you expand a bit more on the updates? What does change, how often, is there changelog or readme etc.
It seems not even spring devs know about it:

This would be a completely stupid attitude for a 'maintainer' to take and (as this thread and several others demonstrate) only results in other people picking up the pieces of someone elses sub-standard software.

Once it gets to the point that software that is supposedly 'maintained' on that basis is redicrecting people to blatently inappropriate webpages that give security warnings, imo it's time to remove it for good.

im still using tasclient
never wanted the springlobby cause of sluggish UI and slow draw events and other small stuff what makes me upset

tasclient updates automatically and my last exe version is from
10.11.2013

i got the same cross site scripting errors and disabled the info page too
...after getting a heart attack ;D

is there no maintainer anymore?
does someone know the last source repo for tasclient?
im coding delphi

Don't call someone else's software sub-standard. Other lobbies crash just as much, and rapid can also be considered security risk if you want to be paranoid.

I'll call a lobby that redirects via http://www.facebook.com whatever I like, thank you very much.

Btw, rapid contains *data* files and not *executable* files. I couldn't care less if TASClient is a security risk to you or not, but lack of tracker/info page wasting other peoples time when it fails is

im pretty sure that the lobby is not redirecting
its more like someone added malicious content to this site:
http://www.springinfo.info/

thats opened by tasclient

I'm just going on what is said in op (which mentions firefox, not IE, and gives a redirect-via facebook url).
