He also says cool stuff about debugging:
http://lwn.net/2000/0914/a/lt-debugger.php3

He basically says that if you are using a debugger then you are a noob. Instead of using a debugger you have to look at the code until you just see the bug. That also makes you a better person.

Agree, but still
plan -> action, otherwise you'll have
action -> re-factor action -> undo -> re-factor again -> fix re-factor bugs -> action loop

See those two Moons? Those are my balls, im Linus, if you aint as tough as i am, you have no right to live on this planet, as the tidal force soon might crash you into jelly anyway.

Honestly, he might be the raised stink finger to humanity of all that is nerd, but i always found the idea that everybody should adapt to your own standards, and no easy creation kits should be supplied a dead give away on a persons character. So yeah, thats linus for you, the guy that made microsoft great.

We have seen that a few times here already. It's called "provide a patch".

I wonder why Linus is such a PR-bitch these days :x

Not that it is bad for Linux, still Linus sometimes has very strange POVs.

Actually, that's not what Linus thinks at all. In fact in the same video he was asked whether or not kids should be introduced into programming a lot earlier in their education, and his response was something along the lines of "As a civilization we advanced due to being able to highly specialize, so no, I don't think that everyone should know to program".
His argument was that work matters, and that most people can achieve great things by working a lot, and that talent plays a very small role.

the problem is, how do i get people to be motivated to do such works. And that is the same thing as asking how can i motivate people en mass to play my game.. and the call of duty answer that still holds true is.. lower the entry standards, provide cheap successes, while always hinting at the learning curve they could climb. Those who want to climb will climb..

I would have hopped it to be common sense enough to not need be told by a tutelary figure.

He basically says that if you are using a debugger then you are a noob. Instead of using a debugger you have to look at the code until you just see the bug. That also makes you a better person.
Now that's a stupid, arrogant and awful advice.

Edit: It appears he's talking about a specific debugger in a specific situation. I understand why when it comes to touching his kernel, he wants special minded hackers instead of your average corporate code monkey.

Shifting "action" to the right by "idea" (interpreted as an integer) would produce 0, no?

I get the impression that a lot of Linus' quotes are twisted by context removal in this way. His strong and very nuanced opinionation is pretty prone to that I guess...but it's interesting how this hearsay distortion is still entirely rampant on a medium for information dissemination (the internet) in which all of the technical requirements for preventing it are met.

So you say what he states is exclusively targeted at kernel debuggers? And his opinion about application debugging is a totally different one?
He mentioned kernel debuggers specifically at some points but for me it looks like he is talking about debuggers in general most of the time.
It seems he hates debuggers and I cant see a sentence that could make me believe his stance on application debugging is a totally different one. I believe he would have made it clear if that was the case.
Is there any indication for that I didnt see? (serious question)

Btw how is this related to hearsay? Its a direct link to a post from Torvalds...

Yes, that is very clear in the linked post.

Maybe. Maybe not. To say either is a subjective extrapolation of his opinion on kernel debugging. This is exactly what I am referring to as hearsay - your paraphrasing.
