Why is it called open "source?"

That part I don't get

To me it was always "open source" with the implication being the source refers to CODE

A modern, comfortable lifestyle relies on a variety of efficient Industrial Machines. If you eat bread, you rely on an Agricultural Combine. If you live in a wood house, you rely on a Sawmill. Each of these machines relies on other machines in order for it to exist. If you distill this complex web of interdependent machines into a reproduceable, simple, closed-loop system, you get these:

Their explanation:
Open Source- we freely publish our 3d designs, schematics, instructional videos, budgets, and product manuals on our open source wiki and we harness open collaboration with contributors.
Maybe they should have dropped the "source." I don't see any code involved, but it's certainly an "open" project.

That said, these guys are definitely doing some very cool things, although it has nothing to do with the free software movement.

when referring to code "source" is already a bastardisation isn't it?

Not really. What's wrong with "source code?"

Nothing wrong with it, just that language changes based on popularly understood meaning. Is the "source" of a computer program, the programmer who wrote it, the place you got it from or the written code?

Given the understood meaning of "open source", I think "open-source hardware" works too. I'm sure Richard Stallman would disagree though..

i guess "source" can also mean construction plans, circuit diagram and generally instructions how to make stuff. And it is "open" because usually you do not get the CAD files if you buy a car.

Curse those stoned, drug taken flower huggers. A real man eats like a dinosaur, fucks like a ape and codes in his closet. Thats what beeing open sauce was always all about, growing mushrooms.

It's most likely because farmers, engineers, and supporters are involved. When they say source, they must mean human resources. I bet they also used that term to make it sound technologically advanced.

I didn't even blink. Old news taking a techie term and using it to market something unrelated. "High Definition" sunglasses. "Nanotechnology" diet pills. "Google" Frog.
