Capture with Fraps in Windows, and GLC or ffmpeg in Linux.

Convert it to H.264 using any of the following free converters:
HandBrake
WinFF
Avanti
Avidemux
Virtualdub

Don't use shitty formats like wmv. Avi is not a format. Use H.264.

use h264, theora or webm. h264 is the most common. Any Video Converter (yes that is the name) will do them all, for free

Also, WMV and AVI are containers (think zip file... there is other shit inside of them), not formats.

The codec used defines the format. h264 generally comes in an mp4 container, Theora in ogv, and WebM in vp8.

...of which H.264 offers the highest quality and is most compatible, ergo use H.264.
Also, try wikipedia next time before asking.

h264 is not the most compatible. WebM is the most compatible. The only browser that refuses to support webm is safari, and mac users are dolts anyway if they aren't using chrome or ff.

WebM is supported by IE9, Chrome, Firefox, Opera.
H264 is not supported by Chrome OR Firefox.

Theora is good but has limited support.

Tell that to people who use iPad iPhone and other webkit based mobile browsers.

If your looking for 1 format your buggered. For HTML5 video full coverage you need 2 formats ( and yes you can specify multiple video files so if it doesnt support a format itll fallback to the next one ).

Also if all that fails, theres nothing stopping you putting JWPlayer inside the video tags for browsers that cant play or dont know about html5

Safari can support Webm with an additional download.

Also IE doesn't support it out of the box either. Both have cited codec patent issues from 3rd parties.

Also what about Metro/IE10? Or IE in safemode? or versions of Opera chrome and firefox older than html5 video?

And you have a good reason for running IE in safemode and that is? Normal internet users are even aware that IE has a safemode? Lolupgrade that buggy pile of steaming crap?
