Is there even want of maps anymore?

Is there even want of maps anymore?
We have soooo many maps for spring currently, so, (mod-specific maps not counted), is there even any want of more spring maps?
Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
This is a hobby group more or less. people will make maps if they enjoy making maps. "Needed" or not.
Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
I am not sure how much of a troll this is, but I will reply briefly anyway.
Maps graphics and options are getting better and better with time. New things like ssmf (a great bonus, adds huge immersion with details changing over the map), extensive lua use in maps like teleportation and lava, weather effects, and a new crop of people who made making maps easier, along with a group who has the knowhow to use these things (Frostregen made springmapedit which is a huge help, Beherith has given us a great workflow with WM/carrara, without smoths featureplacer and mapsettings lua most maps would have a lot less in that department, and knorke does the crazy lua, and now jK has made the map container)
All in all, maps are getting better and better technically. Players play on the better executed new maps, just look at beh's ffa maps or most of arturis maps, they get decent playtime next to the 2 kings, DSD and anything hunter did. Yes, it would be nice to have a bigger player response to new maps, but meh.

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
Just look at how little playtime Behe's latest map got.
Only way new maps will be played is if you basically shove them down the players' throats like BaNa did with his latest map(no offense meant).

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
But hosting your own map and promoting it has been the way it goes for a long time. It is a bit of a chore but otherwise players would just go with inertia and vote away the map they dont know. Ask Arturi, he used to do this a lot. As for beh, some of his maps have overwhelming success, others remain more niche things. His latest was a 16 v 16 map (or 12v12?), maybe spring is not yet ready for that.Cheesecan wrote:Just look at how little playtime Behe's latest map got.

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
You just have to reach the players somehow, which is not always easy with the way autohosts and people roll. And preferably offer something that's not already been done better before.
Anyone got link to that stat of time played on different maps btw? Not Bibims site, which has only most popular ones listed, but some other site.

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
Beherith has better stats but valinoreternal seems down.

The crazy shit you do with wm isnt even funny bro, but I was posting more on who made the knowhow available.
I know hunters been using it for a long time too but it was beh who drew my attention to it.
Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
No thanks, we have enough maps.

Not good ones we don't.Masure wrote:No thanks, we have enough maps.

Think of it this way.yanom wrote:We have soooo many maps for spring currently, so, (mod-specific maps not counted), is there even any want of more spring maps?
There are maybe 20 maps using ssmf
Ignoring that proably 80% of the maps out there barely have a decent texture.
S44, iw both have their own scale and can benefit from custom maps.
CT and kp have their own styles
Those are areas which could benefit from new maps to be sure.
Unless you are masure and have low standards. You will notice that the mappers still around are starting to really push the maps to new levels of quality. So there is room you just need to be willing to make that effort

Counting DSD ?Johannes wrote:Not good ones we don't.Masure wrote:No thanks, we have enough maps.

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
did we need a new engine? TA was good enough
did i need a new pc? commodore was good enough
should columbus have sailed to the new world? europe was good enough
should we ever have come down from the trees? monkeying around was good enough
progress, gentlemen.

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
The "big teams maps" sector is pretty much covered by dsd, nuclear winter, tabula and folsom.
Pretty hard to replace those, esp. since most rivalry maps did not offer anything new.
The popularity of Greener_Fields, Archers_Valley_v5, Comet Catcher Redux and similiar ugly stuff shows that graphics do not matter so much.
maps imo missing (for *A mods)
-small to medium FFA maps for 3 and 5 players.
(slightly related, the BA FFA host only has maps for > 8 players or so, which imo is kinda stupid)
-maps with no direct path to the enemy. I dont mean watermaps but something like:

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
Pfft CCR isn't ugly.
I have several unreleased maps that could be released but I just don't feel like anybody would play them. One of them is a small game FFA map. Kind of feel like any map released today must be exceptional, since everyone else is making such good maps, and many still never get played lol.

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
CCR is hellishly ugly imo. No lighting, no variation in texture, bland metal patches, no features.
Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
yes its ugly, but its the best 1v1 2v2 3v3 map :)Beherith wrote:CCR is hellishly ugly imo. No lighting, no variation in texture, bland metal patches, no features.
