An indepth copy of his instructions are available on http://wrdm.ag/moontable. I'd post scans but I'd really prefer Wired not sue me. If you're at a bookstore / newsstand, the cover is "How to Make Stuff" with a girl holding some sort of screwdriver / tesla coil on the front. He's on page 98-99.

I might make a map table at some point in the next few weeks as I'm finally starting to do some work with my CNC again.

el_Matarife, I am faily sure they were going to "Rosie The Riveter" with that cover., You know, showing her muscles, and shes holding the "Gun" of her trade.

Thanks for the compliments. I'de love to do some more serious projects of this type. These were really pretty cool. And i think it could be a pretty awesome piece of furniture in the house. After doing this one, And seeing the paint job, it was really cool thinking just how awesome we might be able to make a multi-tones map look.

Half the images in this thread are borked and stuffs. Would be nice if we could get pix of all the finished maps in the OP.

Yeah that makes sense. I don't know how I didn't see it sooner.

As far as a multi-tone map goes, I'd cut then paint each stage with a separate paint mask. It'd take forever but I bet I'd get a badass result. Just need to make a jig / fixture to get it back in place perfectly after I pull it off the mill and paint.

Heh, KB and I have been discussing adapting these for Warhammer / other tabletop use forever but neither of us play that so we're clueless. There's a dude on Joes' CNC forum who's a big Warhammer nut and has done some cool plaques for his WH40K league.

I'm 95% sure the only map he ever painted and fully finished out was the latest Moon Q20 he did. http://www.whittledinwood.com/2011/02/g ... emake.html The old Tablua was made on his old rig that had some serious issues, it skipped like half the steps. http://www.whittledinwood.com/2009/02/blog-post.html

Oh ok, my bad then. I was under the impression I'd missed some awesome image of finished Tabula.

Now all we need is 3dprints of modells, and transparent epoxy to freeze the combat in time and space (including missiles, artillery and lazorz)

PS: I want a big Table for a family dinner - can you print trenches?

Actually, the machien that cut the Map, its just like a makerbot, except its really really big, And it lacks a Plastruder (Mechanical Gluegun-thingy)

The idea is, add an extruder, and make my own.

Idea is wrong: Invert Idea is making small casting moulds of model, fill them with molten plastic, paint said modells= win.

Its one of the ugly facts of 3dprinting- Fine details like matchsized guns are either ugly due to support structure- or simply impossible.

My biggest concern was, actually, scale. Since i have made 3 of these maps, and each time the scales were diff.

It would probably make sense to use like, model train scaling conventions for the models. Can you imagine a Warhammer40K TA game? I might actually get into tabletop gaming if that happened.

mass produced units overkill. Even big w40k games dont have that many units.

Edit: You sandbagging SOB. I've been after him all weekend to post it and he finally does it like 20 seconds before I do.

Still, my link is better cause it covers every step: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/03/f ... ewall=true
