How do you show to potential players what SpringRTS is?

Post by ConquistadoRR »

Hi,

I have a few mates who play strategy games a lot, but I can't seem to find a good video which shows epic fights and good graphics without lag.

Most of the videos I find are laggy, shitty camera work or really outdated and not showing the real capabilities of the Spring engine!

Does anyone have a couple of videos on youtube or somewhere else which show the real power of the Spring engine (TA mod based please?).

What helps the best gfx when you have to sit 2 days in the lobby to find an open game? I would rather stick to fuglyness.

In fact I tried the same thing yesterday, and from the main site there are not that many videos.

It would be nice maybe if every game developer would add one/two videos (one gundam, one CA, one XTA etc). I am sure they are somewhere but I don't look for them as I tried most in the real game.

The ta projects only show a fraction of what spring can do.

PLAY BA

I find what you said to be slightly misleading and insulting.

I'm pretty sure that he/she is making a new spring showcase video.

knorke also made a good xta video, it can be found somewhere in the xta subforum. The only other catchy thing i can think of off the top of my head would be spring network.

I agree with both of you, but I think Snoop put it much more tactfully. :P

On topic: we at ZK don't have the time/skills to make a nice video! Even if we did, the game'd look different in another 6 months! What to do?

RE:OP

the way to introduce people to spring is to get them to attend a all-night lan party at your home and then ensure you obtain the passwords to their computers and then slip them all sleeping drugs... then you install spring on all of their computers while they are asleep and ensure that they can all connect to the local lobby server you have set up and run a few test games to ensure all the computers are configured correctly... when they wake up you tell them the room is slowly flooding with poisonous gas and that only way for them to escape is to play spring.

edit: okay, I got carried away there... the best way is to tell them spring is awesome but that they have to see it for themselves and offer to install it for them.

I made some videos about XTA but yeah imo they are decent but not really "showcases"

Play the game. It's free, it does not require a massive time to setup. Especially if you're trying to show it to friends, you can show them the ropes in terms of getting games going and whatnot.

There are several cases when you can't play the game and it can take a long time to setup (only one computer, slow Internet where you are, mac-s, lazy people, 10 minutes available time before you go somewhere else, etc).

If there are nice videos (and I am sure each game developer has at least one of those) why don't you put them on the media page in the video category ?

PS: and this thread wasn't about which is the best mod/balanced etc. Let the people decide.

Can we please say what we mean and say "introduce to BA", not "Introduce to Spring".

We all know thats what people mean but we pussy foot around it and then derail into an *A vs non*A that's slanted because the OP never had non*A in their head to begin with.

Should you decide to argue with what I just said, theres little point as its all utterly irrelevant anyway.

Players dont play engines, players play games, and different games need different things to show themselves off.

Fancy nanoframe sfx wont show off Gundam.
Terraforming wont show off BA
Large armies wont show off comshooter games
etc

Maybe if we stopped calling every Spring this and Spring that, people would stop referring to all the games made for the Spring Engine as "Spring".

Apart from Kernel Panic I know of no spring mod with an official "showcase trailer" style video.

PURE does. It's not the most flattering one (like using the tired O Fortuna for music) but it's there and PURE is easily one of Spring's prettiest games.

I think 'we' (I am kind of new, so it I find it weird to say we) should make a trailer. With this trailer we can show what this engine can do and how much fun can be created with it.

I know that it is free and that you can download it and try for free. But you don't play free games if you don't know what it is. It's too time consuming to figure the installation etc. out if you are a newb.

Also on this modBB site we could use a good Spring 'BA' trailer. Just show there fuzz is all about :)

I seriously lack the film editing skills to make a proper video.

Again, make a BA trailer, not a spring trailer, or youll end up shooting yourself in foot.

Engine trailers are for attracting engine developers

Game trailers are for attracting gamers

Trailers showing lots of games are for people who dont know much about computers and buy these for their grandchildren, only to see them getting binned a few days later:

Does that scream proffesional exciting well made game? Or does it scream cheesey thrown together in 5 minutes? There's little sense of worth, its incoherent, and its doomed to failure.

Just ask Smoth, he's been experimenting with marketting Gundam to see what works, or Zwszg, foreboding too, or the S44 people. Theyve gotten far more users out of selling a game to gamers, than they have selling an engine ecosystem to game players.
