Spring randomly crashes before games on my laptop

my laptop is a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (2010), and i got it 2 weeks ago. its an Intel Graphics Accelerator, and as i said, brand new.

so, why does Spring keep crashing?

new != good

Make sure to turn down all (graphical) settings for spring to minimal values (no shadows, basic water, ...) . if it crashes, attach infolog.txt as file to you forum post.

it froze, then would not respond...(did i say crash, i meant not responded)

Start Spring and click "Edit Settings" and then change the value "HangTimeout" to 10.
Restart Spring and try to reproduce the bug.
When it hangs, wait 10 seconds and check the infolog for a stack trace.
Post the infolog here.

That said, I'm pretty sure in the end we will find out that it is your intel graphics accelerator that is misbehaving. You have to be prepared that there may be no immediate solution.

Contains no stack trace, which either means that you did not enable the hang detection, hang detection did not work, or (most probably) Spring didn't hang at all, only the display output due to bad Intel gfx driver or hardware.

You can try again, but don't post any more infologs until you can find a section starting "Hang detection triggered" in the file.

i found it, and i set it to 10. that was covered just fine. and it froze like normal, and the process had to be stopped, like normal.

This error may be related to the hang. Did you turns the shadows off?

I suggest you try once more to get some output from the hang detection.

And please do some experimenting to find out whether the game actually hung or just the display. For example, if you write some chat after the hang, does it appear in the infolog? Do you have sound? Does it respond to commands such as Ctrl+A Ctrl+D?

i cant type, because it freezes 1 sec after i start the game. there is sound, but only if it happens before it freezes. and the commands? i dont know, i do know that it has to be shut down immediately.

sorry for the double post, but i just saw tech support recently, and they said that i have a quad core laptop. so, maybe Spring is only running off of one of my cores. does Spring have quad core support?

There is unofficial support for multi core, but that will not help you. It has more bugs and limited mod support, and should therefore only be tried after you have been able to run the regular spring version without glitches.

I'm sorry that I cannot help you more ATM, I was hoping that hang detection would output something useful, but it did not.

Can you try a small map, like this one:http://www.springfiles.com/show_file.php?id=2087
It works for me with "native" mods, like BA, XTA.
But with CA or big maps, Spring can't be loaded at all
Loading process comes to "Finalizing" and halts there. It looks like working, cause the hdd led is flashing and process explorer showing 50% of CPU on spring.exe

i tried that, no improvement.

why is there no reliable multi-core support? seeing as advanced that Spring is, you would think that it would be able to run on advanced computers.

The problem is not multi-core support, Spring runs fine on a variety of dual and quad core computers with a modicum of tweaking. The problem with your particular experience is entirely a result of your graphics card, or lack thereof.

Intel integrated graphics chipsets are terrible, far less reliable and powerful in general than the dedicated cards we used six years ago. You can't expect to play a modern three-dimensional or particularly active two-dimensional game on an integrated chipset well. It doesn't matter how many cores or processors you have, the GPU is a necessity and cannot be replaced - for your purposes - with a CPU.

Nedie, you're right.
But as far as I remember a .80 and .81 versions works fine with my Intel card

i can play Supreme Commander 2 fine (with a few graphical bugs, but its still very much playable)

i have played much more advanced games on this laptop just fine, so why doesnt Spring play?
