Song that defines a genre.

Post by Gertkane »

I've had this idea for a while and had lots of feedback from friends etc. yet would like to see the feedback/input from Spring people aswell.

Commenting etc. is all good and more than welcome. In case you want to post a song, post only one song per person and put the genre aswell that you think the song defines for you.

For example:

Defines Hip-Hop for me. Even though i do not listen to the song as much as i used to, every few months when i find myself listening to this i have no doubts that this is the song that defines the aforementioned genre for me.

nice post gert!

haven't listened to that one for ages, and it was nice to hear it again.

hiphop went to shit about halfway though the 1990s. i CBA to listen to people going on about how rich they are.

think i'll have a try to define "shock rap".

Shoegaze/Postrock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKyrULAfvq8

American Punk Rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCz8PNvABO0 --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM6KF_Pz ... re=related (20 odd minutes of it :D)

Imo genrefication inherently diminishes art, cool music links are always good tho :)

Blindspott? Ugh ,couldn't you have picked a decent band, like old Feelers or old Shihad? Even Elemeno P would have been an improvement over them.

The thing is you're not picking your favourite, you're picking the definitive, I don't particularly like Scribe but he is definitive of NZ hip hop.

I think this song defines "doom metal" for me.
Not brutal as in "zomg epic breakdown after the singer is done screaming and starts doing oing oing and all the pink shirted guys start windmilling their arms."
More heavy like a bulldozer rumbling through a tar pit.

Thanks for the link, I'm into almost anything with a guitar (from acoustic to death metal) , and I had never listened to much post-rock, and now I have a new artist to get into :)

A few genre defining songs from me :

Acoustic Indie/Folk (is that even a genre? who cares) :
Jos├® Gonz├ílez - Stay in the shade (or anything of his really)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grFSktOx6qo

Progressive Metal (going to cause much argument I know)
Between the Buried and Me - Selkies : The Endless Obsession
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19UZd_DKs2Q

Post-Metal
Isis - 20 Minutes/40 Years

Oooh that riff is godly!

Black Sabbath single handedly invented most of all metal genres in decennia to come, death-, trash-, doom metal. XD

More doom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akt3awj_ ... re=related

For me this is the only band worth mentioning in its genre, and this song kicks ass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R_TFu4Nmd4
Black metal at its best. In general i dislike black metal, but those opening riff are just.... evil, or something (in a good way).
