Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
i've heard it is possible to attach pieces via lua (can someone confirm), so you'd just need separate pieces and can attach them at runtime.
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
hell, if someone comes up with a framework and wants to work with the idea; lego v2 is getting closer and closer every day, soon there will be enough parts to choke a horse
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
How many of each, though? Also you can't stretch or scale the pieces in unit-script, only relocate/rotate.PTSnoop wrote:Something like Warzone2100 shouldn't be too tricky, I'd have thought. All you really need is one model with all the pieces, and a ridiculously long animation-script saying when to show what.
I'll have a go at some sort of proof-of-concept some time this week.
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
I'd envision a simplified thingy like the ship-designer in GalCivII (which I think is included in the demo)... each "passive" piece had an attachment point and possibly some hardpoints... then there were active pieces like Gunz and Sensors... you would have a base piece and attach other pieces at the hardpoints and be able to specify scaling and rotation...
I can't imagine anything this complex in an rts so you would likely just have base, movement equipment (legs, wheels, hover, tracks etc), and weapons slots with weapon choices.
What would be REALLY awesome would be if you ported your legos to GalCivII such that one could use the GalCivII ship designer to design units...
Okay, never mind, I've obviously lost my mind

i would not be against the idea at all.
however i would refuse to do the balancing, let someone else take the heat

Hello KaiserJ,
This method of creating units is great. I can teach my friends who know nothing about anything how to create units and now I have an instant dev team. I am inquiring about the progress made on Lego v2 and the date of release. Also, is there any chance you could post the source files for the units in the first post? That would be spiff.

Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
hi neuralize! thanks for the kind words; im glad people are responding favourably to this little project.
as far as lego v2 goes... i've been dragging my feet a bit on unwrapping/ skinning; making units with the "basic set" prompted me a bit in terms of what shapes are useful and which are not; so i wanted to give the v2 set some "sitting and stewing" time; i would say, ETA somewhere in the 2-5 week area (i know its still a while from now but i have a bunch of projects on the go, so we'll see how time allocates itself)
hmm... source? do you want the .max files? the 3ds file there should be loadable into just about any 3d program, but i can provide another format if you like (edit : im an idiot. uploading the 3ds file with the units into first post in the next few mins... keep in mind that the models are not fully "clean" in that there still are faces there that should be deleted for the sake of efficiency)
also if you think you're going to use these kits to make a game; its crucial at this point that you let me know exactly what sorts of parts you'd like to see in the new set so that i don't forget anything...
anyways cheers! join me on the lobby in #kaiser; i'll be posting screens as i go along... tentatively sometime in the middle of next week i'll unwrap and start to finalize v2.

Jeez everyone and his brother has a channel named after himself. Join me in #carrepairer to discuss this issue further. No just kidding, don't.KaiserJ wrote:join me on the lobby in #kaiser; i'll be posting screens as i go along... tentatively sometime in the middle of next week i'll unwrap and start to finalize v2.
I'll see you in #kaiser to discuss those legos we spoke about :)
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
That reminds me, I have to make my presence known in #af and #AF
I'd very much like to see progress, this is a very useful idea

Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
Reminds me of supcom models :)
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
progress update : lego v2 should be ready in the next few weeks... original set x2.5 parts... much more to work with... make bots, ships, etc
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
for anyone hanging about and wondering... i've unwrapped v2 now, using arghs suggestion of 3x everything (teamcolor, "flat color" and "detail")
so you'll be able to assemble however you like without worrying "ahh the part i want to use is teamcolored, i wanted flat"
without tripling, you still have access to 2.5x as many parts (wow. i thought tripling was spelled tripleing)
moar wings, some boat bitz, robot legs, all sorts of nice things.

Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
Im wondering if you could add some hydraulic rams and cylinders to your great legos?
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
A full steampunk set might be nice as well... but I won't suggest more than I have already.
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
nothing wrong with steampunk at all... would i need to add models do you think? or could i get away with skinning only...
just working away covering all faces, you can see i've copied some of the graphics over between the three sets, eventually each piece will have a unique design but for now i feel its more important just to get everything skinned so i can start putting models together.
hydraulic rams will be easy enough
i didnt both with tank treads, as i don't really understand how the animation for them works; if people bitch enough there's some room left on this texture for me to add them in (or anything else i've missed for that matter)
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
just a small hint for easier adding of the feature:
To animate tank treads it's the best to have the uv coords be across the full texture (e.g. the edges of the rectangle should be on the left and right border of the texture).

Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
In S44 it's done by having 2 tread pieces for each tread, one with it's elements moved 1/2 element.
i.e.
Then by alternatingly showing one of these pieces and also spinning the wheels it gives the impression the treads are animated.
i.e.
Code: Select all
x.x.x.x.x.
.x.x.x.x.x
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
jk is probably suggesting a means via a shader scrolling the uvs of the tread pieces, which is how it's done in commerical games these days and is something I'd like to do for S44 but my shader-fu is nil.
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
Yeah, I was just giving some other approach one might use
Re: Legos - a kit to create unit models quickly and easily.
S44 approach is pretty bad really, quite jittery. Though due to how small tank track links are in reality, its not so obvious. It'd be pretty ugly with more emphasised links (iirc Mr. D's remakes use 4 pieces to show/hide so its smoother)Tobi wrote:Yeah, I was just giving some other approach one might use
