Not to derail this discussion before it even begins, but why do so many people outside the United States start threads dealing with issues primarily in the United States? I would rather discuss something somewhere else myself.

Because most internet users are from the US I guess! A possible referendum on a change to instant runoff voting after the next election is probably the most interesting thing that's happened lately here. Also the continuing MP expenses scandal (summary here). There have also been a lot of noises about cutting spending to reduce the deficit (one example) including public sector pay freezes (nooooo).

Because many issues have parallels in other countries and barely anyone would know about NZ politics.

Here's a summary for you,
John Key is a douche and ruining the country.

People talk about US cause its the cultural center of western civilization.
who is gonna talk about french Spanish Swedish politics?
who cares except people living in those countries..
on the other hand if you follow USA news maybe you'll have an edge if it suddenly decided to invade your country ;)

Same reason why nigra isnt. Since kiwis call eachother kiwis, its not racist. Just jargon.

We could make a politics sub forum for off topic. It could be the septic system of the forums.

Most news sites report on them and US news often seem hilariously stupid to non-Americans.
