Arm Beamer

Post by Achilla »

What's the point of building this? It seems like one of the very most useless fortifications in the entire game. Poor range and poor dps. I didn't really notice like dps was increasing on a single target over time either. I'd like to hear some pros say what's the point (if any) of this structure and if it had experienced any nerfs in the past. Just wondering.

Great dps, outranges llt and t1 rocket kbots, builds fast, repairs fast.

Also Blu-RayÔäó is the way.

(Someone should add latest BA to Modit. Older versions claim Beamer's DPS to be 400! compared to LLT's 156.25 and HLT's 215. I don't get it.)

Remember that beam weapons have a range-falloff. Thus, longer-ranged beam-weapons are actually more powerful than similar-DPS short-ranged beam-weapons. If the HLLT and the Beamer are both firing at a unit at the HLLT's maximum range, the Beamer has more DPS.

Hm, so the damage is highest at maximum range and then diminishes to point 0?

I think it would be a bit more logical to increase the damage when the distance decreases and to increase the dps over time if fired over single target till a set cap. Either way, I will have to give more attention to the Beamer it seems, I never thought of it as reworked HLLT actually (perhaps that's why I overestimated the role of this structure).

@Achilla: beam weapons do full-damage at point-blank range, and half-damage at maximum range. This means that, at the range where the HLLT/LLT are doing half-damage (their max) the Beamer delivering a larger proportion of its damage.

I choose beamer over t2 popup when my base get unexepectedly swarmed, they are way faster to build so you can spam them all over your base as you would only have 1 or 2 popup by the time the raiders come.

I just thought it would be a cool idea, because right now they are pretty much anti-swarm weapon as well, while they could be a specialised killer of heavily armoured, single targets (achievable by increased range and damage scaling over time as well as lower turret turn rate and small initial damage).

honestly i dont think beamers and hllts have very many uses, because by the time you get to the point where you can really afford to build them easily, game has usually progressed to stumpies or raiders which deal with them easily... and because of this llt serves the purpose better since it is cheaper and does the same thing, just less of it (keeps away small ammounts of flash and jeffies). i really dont think beamer is underpowered though, there are definently times when it is the right unit to use, it is just rare because of the way ba plays out.

Well, I've seen them used to good effect on hyper-chokepoint maps like Altored Divide.

In most cases, you're either stalling or you have excess metal. Rarely will you find you have enough metal for a beamer and not for a HLT.

This is my lineup:

Beamer > HLT Vs Bots
Beamer > HLT Vs Flash
HLT > Beamer Vs Janus, Riot, Samson & Slasher
HLT > Beamer Vs Porcpush

But in all honesty, Stumpy shits on all boats.

You know, if instead of building fixed fortifications (unable to move), you could just build, you know, regular units? That way they can be wherever you need them to be. Oh noes! Units heading to my base?!? Look how well my mobile units moved to my base to defend it.

Oh noes! Those units turned around and headed for my neighbor's base?!? Look how well my mobile units went to my neighbor's base and defended it.

Except for a few choice locations (choke points on maps, ramps, hills) I will always take mobile units over fixed defenses.

I would like to note, for posterity, that Nonoce never said he didn't use mobile units on defense.
