ModHijacking (again)
This time more subtle and elaborate.
Senna included his own mod inside a mapfile, and tricks other users into playing it under the name of latest BA version.

Re: ModHijacking (again)
wonder why nothing has been done about that
Re: ModHijacking (again)
Because a map doesn't really hijack anything in particular. You're not going to quote any of the extensive conversations about this, and make it sound like you just came up with this?
Re: ModHijacking (again)
Then you should also note the TradeMark's hijacks in his maps.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
This isn't mod hijacking or even deceitful: it's pretty obvious the map contains a lot of mod changes from the description. Same with TradeMark's maps.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
lol I recal a certain someone releasing ca chickens for ba for all the wrong reasons (out of spite). I WONDER WHO THAT COULD BE.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
How is this hijacking? It can only be played like this with THAT map, not with other maps, so this is just a feature he added to his map. Just like DOTA.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
He himself admitted that it is a mod, and that the only sole reason he included it inside a map is because nobody would want to play it if they seen that it is a different modified BA.lurker wrote:Because a map doesn't really hijack anything in particular. I'm all for removing the ability of maps to change/add mod related files.==Troy== wrote:Then you should also note the TradeMark's hijacks in his maps.
It does not offer description in the lobby about what the map contains, all it says is that it is "special". It is nowhere written besides the download site (which people don't see because of autodownloading).tombom wrote:This isn't mod hijacking or even deceitful: it's pretty obvious the map contains a lot of mod changes from the description. All a player sees is DSD special on BA. Every newbie that happens to join the host is being deceived.
It was released as a mutator with a separate name for it. Completely unrelated scenario.Apollo wrote:lol I recal a certain someone releasing ca chickens for ba for all the wrong reasons (out of spite). I WONDER WHO THAT COULD BE.
On Spring server you have more than one game (BA, CA, gundam etc). On warcraft you have a single game, called warcraft. Maps (scenarios) function as mutators for warcraft.Hoi wrote:How is this hijacking? It can only be played like this with THAT map, not with other maps, so this is just a feature he added to his map. When you're joining a game on spring, you look at the modname to see what game you are going to be playing. The maps are 99% of the time only heightmaps where the game is played because people can create their own game mutators as standalone modfiles.
Creating a map with the sole purpose of leeching players from one mod to your own is in every sense hijacking a mod.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
It's not leeching, he made the map to get people to play his own form of the mod, modified, on a particular map. Yeah, I see no use for it, like steam wars, but it isn't hijacking.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
BA is a mod. This is a mod of BA. Where is the hijacking and/or confusion?

Basic released a mod with the same name as BA, senna put his mod inside a map. The end result in either of these situations is the same, you see BA hosted but it is another mod.neddiedrow wrote:It's not leeching, he made the map to get people to play his own form of the mod, modified, on a particular map. They both did the same thing in the end. One is hijacking, other is not?
Re: ModHijacking (again)
one applies to all maps and the other one to a specific map with a different name. It also is the same as mod/clan name stealing thats why it was actioned against.
you can say that speedmetal is a modhijack because of the speed mods and high e values as it doesnt represent normal BA gameplay or any of the speedball variants or duck with the special fusions.

Re: ModHijacking (again)
So it is perfectly fine to release all popular maps with slightly altered name and include your mod in them? "Tabulav2_fix.smf" "Tropical_fix.smf" etcOtherside wrote:one applies to all maps and the other one to a specific map with a different name. Re: ModHijacking (again)
Not precisely, the name or description needs to tell the full tale so nobody is duped into playing it against their wishes.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
The name includes "special" in case of sennas map and offers no description of its nature in lobby. The whole point of it is to trick users into playing it.neddiedrow wrote:Not precisely, the name or description needs to tell the full tale so nobody is duped into playing it against their wishes.
(it's not even his map as he didn't make dsd but that's beside the point)
Re: ModHijacking (again)
He advertises it as Special with his special addons, or he has in the past.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
He says "come play dsd special LINK" or something similar. He runs it on nixtux autohost and there is no description of it being another mod. Just special.neddiedrow wrote:He advertises it as Special with his special addons, or he has in the past.
Re: ModHijacking (again)
this is stupid pointless whining you can just go another autohost and play normal dsd its not exactly hard to get a BA game or voting for normal maps

Re: ModHijacking (again)
No it's not stupid and pointless. Regret is right. If someone made their own mod and called it BA or CA deceitfully, that wouldn't be okay and you wouldn't tell them "just don't play it."Otherside wrote:this is stupid pointless whining you can just go another autohost and play normal dsd its not exactly hard to get a BA game or voting for normal maps
There is no description in the map that reveals its true nature. It's DSD with a hidden mod in it, and they admit that they use it to attract BA players. They could host their own mod on regular DSD. There is absolutely no reason to put a mod into a map other than to be deceitful.
No, because the makers of mods are fully aware of maps' ability to have speed mods and high map wind values (as in the case of CA, the wind values of the map are ignored). Mod makers don't work on their game just so a map can completely override all their units and gameplay and just keep their name!Otherside wrote:you can say that speedmetal is a modhijack because of the speed mods and high e values as it doesnt represent normal BA gameplay or any of the speedball variants or duck with the special fusions.
