CORE Radar truck +1

Post by MR.D »

I'm going to go for a speedround with this Radar truck and the jammer, so I can get onto wrapping up the CORE vehicle units.

I'm still working out how to make the Radar dish look bigger, and it will probably go through a few changes before I get the final dish setup done for it, but the main body is finished.

The OTA Radar truck might have been the base reference for the Wolverine unit, as its basic shape is so similar, I made this unit boxier and more solid looking so it stands apart better.

The unit is at 1274 triangles.

Great model! Just one thing, I think that the back is too wide, or that there is too much open space between the 2 back wheels/tracks.

My advice is to make a model that is NOTHING like the original, since the original looks like shit and has a design that makes about 0 sense. Just my opinion, but ofc, your remodel looks good, despite the fact that the design is stupid (like the ota one).

looks cool, though the 4 wheels make it look a bit arm-ey

I did a quick vid on how the radar dish parts move around.

Its a very simple anim just for on/off modes, although I'm not sure there is any advantage for turning it off.

Maybe mod wise, the unit could be stealthy until the radar is activated (active/passive radar) or something along those lines, but thats up to the mod makers.

Model (as usual) looks great. I am, however, left wondering how it would steer?

Same way tanks steer. Reverse or slow one side of the tracks / wheels

this would work if the vehicle had only 2 tracks, but as it is that method of steering wouldn't work. AFAICS at least.

Well I can't see why it wouldn't...

Because You are an artist. I build all sorts of drivetrains, and I know for a fact that the way the back tracks are in place would GUARANTEE lack of turning ability of any sort that resembles a tank.

Interesting radar anim, though. Very interesting...

Looks real nice, only the base looks better on a Mammoth tank; that base is HUGE!

And will this be included in CA???

@trib - if the cats were driven by internal motors, the steering could be at the back by swivelling them. but yeah, that shape means no tank-style steering.

It could steer by raising one of the two rear wheel legs, making the wheels unbalanced from one side to the other...

...giving it a turning circle of Green Fields

Its not a race car guys :-)

Call me crazy, but if you put the front wheels in neutral and let the rear tracks push/drag just like a tank, I don't see why it wouldn't have a fair steering arc..

I could fiddle with it a bit to make sure that you guys believe it can turn on a dime, but I really just want to finish it quickly and move on to more important units.

This unit is less likely to turn than the OTA version.

Its just so obvious to me, but do I need to make a picture for those who are not engineers?

Here is my GLORIOUS mspaint rendition of the problem

So, basically, the front wheels need to be rotatable around the y-axis like most cars, or be spheres that can spin in any direction?

I'm going to make a Hinging body design then, that's the easiest way to help its turning radius without having to redo the whole thing.

Look at an Earth Mover vehicle, that's how I'll do it.

I see what you're saying with how the design I got now won't turn very well, but I don't see the OTA model doing much better really.

Can you guys live with something like this?
