mod based on xta, cool or not

Post by Noruas »

a mod using xta, that changes the gameplay, by more units, rebalancing efforts, and actually level 3 units.

would this be a good or a bad turnout?
i didnt think too much on this idea, but i think its good, dont take it too critical.

Well, that's kind of vague for anyone to judge, do you have things more specific in mind than that? I also have a hunch that the opinions on "rebalancing efforts" will have a... oh, let's say diverse reception among the forum's residents...

Heh, reballancing XTA and adding units will be tricky as hell.

I favor making an entire new race or two, unfortunatly, i'll probably end up doing it by my self for the most part since I hate having another person to wait on :P

My version of TA really, it will be set in the beginning of the 22nd century, there will be futeristic tanks, planes, and weaponry, perhaps something like a Bot or Mech.

Tanks will have Railguns and some advanced Machinegun, planes will have compact ammo that has plasma loaded warheads and will be shot at high velocity and will be dual purpose, aircraft all will be VTOL, combination of a type of anti-gravity and some form of jet propulsion, shapes will mostly be triangular, bombers will not be bombers in the traditional sense but they will carry vast loads of compact cruise missiles.
Infantry will probably have powered exo-skelletons of some sort.

Think of it being like WD, but set in the future and weapons will be something realistic and based on current developments.

If it's good enough, this could be the base Spring could be based on, perhaps I can invite the best designers to help me on this, I need somebody that can work almost fulltime on this, not just some parttimer that occasionally gives a unit or two (that isn't even well ballanced or doesn't even fit in with the rest).

I want the spring community to get the best by the best, I want people like ZW and other dedicated TA fans to work on this, like Gnome too and possibly mother if he's up to it.

How about we do that instead of a re-reballanced TA that is stuck to copyright? because this new game will not use a shred of OTA stuff besides that's hard-coded into spring it self.

Starship Troopers? maybe the exo-skelletons, yes, but that's something the military is already working on, Railguns/Gauss guns are THE armor piercing guns for the future, I honestly think lasers will probably be restricted to anti-infantry weapons if anything.

Rail guns require an exorbitant ammout of energy to make effective. I seriously doubt they will be standard issue on tanks any time soon. They have started designing railgun mount's for battleship primary weaponary however... Railguns used as artillery could potentially be capable of firing non propulsed rounds nearly out of earth's atmosphere to accomplish a range of over 200 miles. The kinetic energy of a railgun projectile hitting the earth from that height is roughtly the same as a 200 pound bomb, with NO explosives acctually on the round at all. All in all a very cost effective bombardment solution.

XTA is not good mod to add level 3 units to, because level 2 are already so expensive/powerful. UH is way better here, but we already have AA!

Well someone has alrdy made a rail gun. In real life. That really works.

Only problem is, the rails of the rail gun are damaged each shot, and need to be replaced. He has also made a gauss gun, but that also is not up to the stage of being a usable weapon. I just HAVE to get me one of these!

So, you really think in 100 years we wont have a lightweight super power system that is compact enough to be housed in a Tank? you wont recognize the world anymore in a 100 years, i'm sure we will have attained interstellar spacetravel on a comercial level and weapons will be something we probably couldn't imagine, power would hopefully be either Zero Point, Antimatter or Fusion which all can be made compact enough, esspecially with the advent of nano-technology, nano-technology is already aproaching maturity and will probably be perfected in the next 10 years or so.

I think your being a little hopefull in some of your predictions there, but advances like these are definatley on the horizon. 100 years for interstallar travel is a bit hopefull, as it can easily take 100 just to get to some of the closer stars. (closest star is 1 light-year away, but that is just luck). Nanotechonogy is getting better, but it will not be REALLY good for quite a few more years. But for a near-future mod like this, exo-skeletons, railguns, gauss guns, nanotechnology, and stuff like that is very fesable.

Or we may reach a point where there just isn't anymore you can do, and society will stagnate and eventually collapse in on itself.

There will always be more stuff to do. Atleast in the forseable future. Untill we have invented inter-galactic travel (VERY unlikley to ever happen at a large scale anyway), and explored EVERY galaxy in the UNIVERSE(!!!) there will be stuff to do. Then, if some of the theorys are correct, there is MULTIPLE UNIVERSES, and all the galaxy's in them, and...

You get the point. There will be stuff to do.

If we never get FTL... I don't think anyone will bother wih inter-galactic travel...

[K.B.] Napalm Cobra, aren't you a little pessimistic?

For all we know the US Government did reverse engineer a UFO in Roswell and already have FTL craft, sounds far fetched, but what if it's true? then what I predicted is underestimated lol, just a thought :)

But for the mod, I think this gives us alot of freedom in what we want in this mod, we can use OTA style combat, we can even include some spaceships, but they wouldn't be terribly powerful.

I remember a long time ago when I wanted to make a TC for TA that would be futuristic... there would be the infantry/power-armored-infantry, the jets, tanks, ships (not on the small scale like TA, but more capitalship-like)... and exotic weapon platforms too, like mechs (distinctly different from BTech though), hovercraft, land ships (not really hovercraft, because they'd use anti-grav and they'd be big), and space-ships (really high altitude aircraft).

Rock on GZ, futuristic realism (or is it realistic futurism?) is a good way to go.

I'm quite aware of that actually. Simple rail guns are a pretty common physics student project. The current limitation on rail guns is just the amount of energy they need to fire. A rail gun that can push a round at the same speed your average sniper rifle fires one takes roughly the same energy to fire once that a small town uses in a day. Tank rail guns would need to fire faster then that and have a larger round to be worth using as opposed to conventional weapons. For all intensive purposes we're essentially talking about tanks with mini nuclear generators on board, and to be honest, I SINCERLY doubt that will be happening within the next 100 years (it involves half a dozen technologies that basically don't even exist in theory right now). Research into new energy supply methods is pretty much at a standstill right now, and when it does advance it's generally by small leaps with refining or perfecting existing technology (making a better combustion engine happens a lot).

I fully expect to see an increase in military robotics technology, and really all technologies dependent on computers to work, since computers are advancing unbelievably fast. But I would wager that we're going to be packaging conventional munitions for their efficiency and cost effectiveness for a while to come.

Actually nuclear tanks are technologically possible, miro reactors built by the americans are small enough to fit into a large tank, a tight squeeze but possible, however the american government wouldnt be willing to risk a minor thermonuclear explosion on the battlefield everytime a tank went boom, or the possibility of the nuclear components being stolen from disabled tanks.

Mind you the technology doesnt allow for the radiation shielding to be placed in a tank.

Overral I'm dissapointed that a poll hasnt been started asking wether we should remod XTA or add a race, I'd choose the later.
