Arggg!!!!!!!! Has anyone else had this problem?
Has anyone else had problems with windows explorer deterating? To the point where when you open explorer to look at stuff and it shows you no drives and in the other window it shows a flashlight swinging back and forth looking for folders and never finds them? So you have to go to the drives manually?
I have this problem occasionally on Win XP Pro, and it really annoys me.
Any soulutions?

you know, I think I have a similar problem to yours. The first time I go into My computer, My Documents, or use a shortcut to a folder (I like to go everywhere I need to from my desktop), the computer takes like a 10-second pause. It doesn't freeze, it just takes my window about ten seconds to pop up, and then after that it's fine until I turn off the computer. Nothing big, but it only happened a couple of months ago.
I have another issue too. It's really annoying because Windows has been eating my antivirus program's desktop shortcut. Does anyone here know off the top of their heads how to turn off the automatic desktop cleaning?

Odd... it's not turned on. Well I don't think my shortcut is bent on self-annihilation, and my screen-name is passworded, so it's not like my siblings (I share the computer
) or someone else is doing this. Since it's the shortcut to an antivirus program, I wonder if I've got a bug specifically targeting it. I'm not a virus-paranoid idiot, but who knows, maybe it could happen.

There are a handful of viruses that attempt to disable anti-virus programs. Not too many around anymore tho.FizWizz wrote:Odd... it's not turned on. FizWizz glad to see i'm not the only one who has to share a computer(at least I have a brother who does things right and put together a decent comp: AMD Athalon running at 2.0 gHz, 512 ram, asus g4 ti 4200, a nice 19" 1280x1024 32 bit moniter running at 75 Hz refresh rate, ect..It runs most games including spring. He upraded his comp so he had leftovers, though I wish I had his 6600 gt card in this machine.). Though I have a sister that goes to sites like "Neopets and Gaia Online", and just happend to pick up a nasty virus or something that causes the "REBOOT AFTER 10 SECONDS CYCLE OF DOOM!!!".
Yeah we still haven't figured it out, but we managed to disable some programs so now it dosen't happen anymore. EXCEPT!!! when my sister gets on the computer and goes to "Kids WB". I think their site's been hacked, and now sends out SUPER BUGS that cause the CYCLE OF DOOM.
Hey at least the computer runs..........

Yep, thats bang on right. It manly becasue kid will undoubtably click YES when they get the pop-up" you need to click yes to play this silli game, thats right YES needs to be pressed, or we wont give you 10 seconds of entertainment, one last time press YES now..."
How many times do i have to fix my brothers computr?... lots...

start your computer, do everything you usually do on your computer, and before shutting down, go to administrative tools, go to services, anything that's active at this point should be set to automatic start-up or is spyware and should be uninstalled... that's a trick I learned, just helps with those "the first time I" problems...
also, get an anti-spyware program, acctually get 3 of them... start using firefox... get AVG anti-virus... these things will help your computer work better... if siblings use game sites... and they don't work in firefox... it's because they are trying to install spyware so tell them to stop... generally

Ain't Windows great... You catch that out of the internet just for beeing connected. The wonderful dudes that came install me the internet (1 year ago or something), left me a hell of a mess to take care of.TA 3D wrote:... "REBOOT AFTER 10 SECONDS CYCLE OF DOOM!!!". ...
Anyway, Firewalls will block those virus from working (there are at least 2 of them with that behaviour).
If you already got that virus but not a firewall, whenever you see that message, execute in a comand line (DOS-box or "Start"+"R") the following comand:
shutdown -a
Alternatively, put a txt file on your desktop with that comand in it and change it from .txt to .bat . Now all you need is double click in it to execute the interupt shutdown comand.
(In my MCSE course, people kept sending each others shutdown orders)
There are a few that i can't remember but here goes:TA 3D wrote:I've got AVG(free edition that is) on the computer, but it can't find anything. Oh well.....
Anti-virus: AVG (there is a free edition)
Firewall: Zone Alarm or the one that comes with SP2
Spyware: Spy bot (can work actively, like an anti virus, warning you of suspicious activities by browsers and stuff)
Linux - No Spyware, no virii, no need for firewall, built-in firewall anyway, runs spring through wine (no sound yet... and crumpled fonts but great FPS)
I have Spybot, Adaware, AVG(free edition), A linksys router with a firewall/network system/DSL router imput(form DSL router box), all the windows stuff configured. Basiclly I have a brother that knows almost anything and everything when it comes to networking/computers[thanks bro :- ]. So all I can say is that what ever is buggin this comp is probaly something my sister picked up and Win XP deteriorating. But at lest we were able to stop the app from running, though as to what it is were not sure.... And as long as my sister doesn't go back to the colpret site it's fine. The only problem is the Win explorer deterioration thing. Otherwise it's all good.
