PCGamer Magazine Coverage - Spring/Star Wars Spring

Post by Warlord Zsinj »

We're happy to announce that Star Wars Spring was recently given a full page spread in the current (Feb) edition of PCGamer (UK).

The article contains part of an interview conducted with me towards the end of 2007, as well as some detailed explanations of our approach to game design and gameplay. We were pretty lucky in that they've approached the article from a serious perspective, and looked at what we've had to say and show from an equal standing point.

Here are two quick quotes:
PCGamer wrote:We sometimes cover things in Mod News that we secretly suspect will never see the light of day. Some ideas are just too good to be true. But Star Wars Spring, a free, decent-looking Star Wars RTS, is actually a pretty safe bet.
...
PCGamer wrote:The rather chirpily named Spring engine is a free framework for making RTS games, most notably the loving Total Annihilation remake Spring:TA

If you're in the UK, I strongly suggest you pick up the latest PCGamer and check out the rest of the article :)

And while I've got your attention, don't forget to:
- Check out our forums, where we post regular art previews
- Help us out if you are interested in texturing, modelling, scripting, sound-mixing or scripting (cob or lua).
- Help us voice our units. All you need is a microphone!
- Keep an eye on our forums for the beta announcement
- bug me to finally post the results of the commander competition

Argh, I know, we're hosted on UF, and that seems to have gone down. Amazing how it goes down just as we post this thread... Murphy I guess.

If anyone needs to get in contact with me regarding anything here (*hint* *hint* help! ;) ), you can PM me or email starwarsspring @ gmail.com (remove spaces).

Roger, there exists a Star Wars mod for almost every game ever made. Lucasarts are pretty tolerant, so long as you aren't repackaging copyright material (soundtracks, voice clips, etc), then we're pretty safe. For example, lucasarts have not persued any of the the SW FPS's, such as those for BF1942, BF2 and BF2142 - and all of those games were directly competing with Battlefront 1 and 2. The most recent RTS was Empire at War, which has long been off store shelves (including expansions). Of course, you can help us be more safe by recording some voice clips for us, so that we can have a larger pool of uncopyrighted voices to draw from! ;)

great!

...but I'm afraid that this publicity might get you a C&D letter before you even manage to make a release (i.e. quick.) please show something fast so it can spread over the intertubes and won't be forgotten.

Like Zsinj said, we probably don't have much to worry about, based on precedent dozens of times over. From what I know, they only specifically target you if you distribute the music, rip content directly out of the official games, or sell it. We do still have a few sound effects from Force Commander (and a handful from OTA in the current build), mostly voice acks; that's why we put out the request for actors. They are in the process of being replaced right now, though.

Now, who wants to go on a Cup hunting party?

This is great! But wouldn't it better for this to appear when the mod is actually released? (Or did I miss the release somehow? O,o)

But, yeah, it will be great publicity for spring as a whole.

How comes it's the unreleased mods that get the most attention?
