Core Garpike +1

Post by MR.D »

I'm going to go ahead and try to finish off the LVL-1 vehicle remodels, starting with the CORE Garpike amphibious tank.

Only 4 left for CORE, being the Leveler, Construction vehicle, Minelayer, and the Wolverine.

So far at 544 triangles, this has 8 octagonal wheels which I'll be changing to Plane objects with alpha to try and skim down the Poly count.

**Zip Contents**
cor_garp_final.max master 3dsmax-7 model
cor_garp.S3O Spring model
cor_garp_1_512.dds Texture+teamcolor

cor_garp_2.dds 1024x1024 origional reflect map/glow/alpha (for editing)

mm I like I like . But i think the gun barrel could be a lot narrower (in diameter). The original had quite a narrow barrel, while yours is 2x the thickness.

Other than, it looks great!

**OTA MODEL**
AFAIK this unit isn't OTA, it was a custom fan-made unit back then (just as the Wolverine you mentioned). But anyway, your remodel looks: 1. Close to original; 2. Good.

You better be sure.

I always thought the Garpike and Pincer were part of OTA..

I am sure Garpike was not in either the TA or the CC unit set. There were no amphibious units (including hovers) until level 2. Also the closest thing to a lvl 1 artillery piece was the thud/hammer.

wow.. I am wondering how those old OTA farts got along without them...

Not even part of Cc 3.1?
So when did they get put into the mainstream Mods as a steady unit?

Afaik, maybe uberhack 4.0? or was it later on when Caydr started doing AA for OTA?

Pincer and Garpike are 3rd party.

All the artillery and amphibs were at t2 in OTA. All you had at t1 was punishers/guardians for arty, though the missile units could outrange LLT's.

The Thud and Hammer were 'Artillery Kbots' in name only- they had 230 range, less range than the Storm/Rocko (400) and way less than the Crasher/Jethro (590). Hell, it was less range than a Stumpy/Raider (240). Artillery refers more to their 'ballistic projectile' than their function.

The leveler was a Cavedog unit, but wasnt in OTA or CC.

On the topic of polygons, try not to worry about that so much. The weasel already looks really strange without transparency on (putting black rather than white around the wheels would help this), and all you're doing is saving a few dozen polygons. Id bet that the polygons you saved are less of a burden to the CPU than turning transparency on would be- and most people play with it off AFAIK. Spring can handle a lot more polygons- OTA is 10 years old!

You shouldnt waste polygons by any means, but you shouldnt have to scrimp and save on them either.

Leveler was a flame tank origionally too right?

But I guess if this wasn't a OTA unit, scratch one off the Copyright list ^^ .

I think so (I wouldnt know though, never used anything but vanilla OTA).

You are designing for spring here, though. I mean, its not like these would be put into an OTA mod- any mod pure enough to be OTA only wouldnt want new models anyway would they?

Indeed, ATM they're only being put into CA AFAIK, and we're going to have to scrub off the core logos and probably re-texture them eventually, at the least.

bawwwwwwww copyright... call it a fan tribute and be done with it. Who fucking cares if you are making a free game model that is inspired by the ta unit.

Looks like hand made stuff.. yep... loooks like a tribute.. yep.. looks good? YEP. So hang the rest and DOOOOOOOOOO IT.

I think you should finish it, make it match your others. An exercise in the art if little else.

No wtf

Leveller was a lvl1 "siege tank", basically lvl1 goliath.

I dunno if I want to finish it now tho, I mean if nobody is going to use it.. whats the point?

Just means more of my free time I that can be dedicated to modeling for the HalfLife-2 mod I'm involved with.

I'm sorry. Just because it was not an original Cavedog unit does not mean it will not be used. I didn't mean to discourage you. The new version looks good. I just meant to clarify that it was not an original Cavedog unit, but rather seems to be a common and popular 3rd party unit. I for one may have been a little too happy to prove my knowledge of the TA unit set.
