Haw haw haw, been waiting to use that one for two weeks now...
IMO the game was very good but as with all recent FPSs it suffers from the disease known as "ultra detailed enemies = 3 enemies onscreen max = all fights are tiny = no realism.
"Oh a crazy person. ZZap whack. Oh look another one just spawned. Whack. Two this time, my goodness. Oh there's two more. Good thing they don't rush me, I'd have to reload or something."
Aside from the TINY fights, I also found powers to be kind of disappointing. I found no legitimate use for telekinesis aside from the occasional puzzle for 3 extra rounds of pistol ammo or something stupid like that. Reminds me of System Shock.
The vast majority of the powers you don't actively use (like mechanic upgrades, etc) are just level 1/level 2/level 3 upgrades of each other. You can stack them, but when hacking is almost impossible to fail to begin with, do you really need three hacking upgrades?
In interviews, the developers made out as though ammo and supplies would be scarce. By midway through the game I had full ammo of ally types for all my weapons, 9 EVE hypos, 9 health kits, and enough money that I couldn't carry more. I can safely say there could've been half the amount of ammo, hypos, and cash and I'd still have tons to spare.
Enemies don't get bigger and meaner, they just get more HP. On the first level and the last level, you encounter identical enemies, they just have like 9x the hit points...
Even Big Daddies were rather lame imho. You were supposed to nee dto plan "how am I going to take this guy down? First I'll light him on fire, then as he's taking constant damage I'll lure him into these grenades, which are followed by electric traps. Now he's in water, I'll electrocute him and finish him off with RPGs." Er... No, I just shot a bunch of times and occasionally dodged around a corner. I used electricity traps exactly once.
I was also expecting free exploration of a big environment. That's what previews had led me to believe this game was all about, how you'd approach fights from totally different directions and have a different experience every time. No, you're basically on a rail shooter as usual, with the option to explore nooks and crannies for the inevitable health kits and ammo.
They even talked about the game as if the city was leaking, as if you had pressure on you at all times. Maybe if you're not fast enough the area you're in will become underwater! Now that would've been intense. They made a big deal about how the water effects were going to blow us away and then made you have an underwater sequence EXACTLY ONCE, at eh very beginning of the game. How about you put an entire level underwater, forcing us to use weapons that work when submerged?
Were there any stealth segments at all?
An proper "Deus Ex 2", what I was hoping for based on previews, this is not.
Despite all that, I'd still give it 8.5 out of 10 for the pretty good story and pretty fun gameplay.
So... finally I wonder, does anyone know what was actually IN that submarine?
BTW I wasn't playing on easy.
