This is probaly nearly impossible in near future but... how about making it possible to do planet shaped maps, like the ones of populous?

populous doesnt have spherical maps at all. It has the illusion of sphere worlds but really they're just heightmaps on donut worlds.
What happens is you have the top down view where its all flat TA style.
Then you ahve side mode where you can see the curvature, this is by rotating rendered co-ordinates to display the flat world as if it where a sphere world. Internally the model of the world doesnt match this.
Then you have the global view, which is a sphere with a coloured in heightmap with overlaid icons for sfx and units.
This is further supported in that populous maps are indeed heightmaps combined with AI scripts, feature positions, and displacement maps determining what texture to use for flat areas (singular ) and what colour terrain is at certain heights.

populous 3 does not have spheres. It has the illusion of spherical worlds. The nearest is global view which is a half sphere with textures and icons drawn on it.

I think AF is right - if it had Spheres, there would have been a Cheat so you can (on a fast Pc) free move the Camera around. Still was a fantastic Game... and a fantastic Donut. Donuts beat Cookies by Shape and sweet Inner Values..

In spring we also dont have free cam so "
donut maps" would be nice.

All the cameras provide full spinning 360* except the default overhead camera.
FPS camera and Rotatable overhead camera allow full 3D positioning of the camera at any angle in all 3 axis.
Whats sad is that stuff like zoom to cursor only works in the overhead camera.
