In Halo: Reach it makes sense but unfortunately it doesn't for any of the others :P

In any case it's better to have a story compatible with the majority of games people play, even if most don't really care about it.

Once upon a time this deserted landscape had been a river delta filled with bubbling water and all kind of joyful creatues.
Then the machines came and with them came war.
They bombed craters into the river banks and burned all the trees.
The water got contaminated with chemicals and the joyful creatures went away. Then the water went away too.
The machines stayed. It is the year 3075 and this is the story of badsd.

That would make a pretty cool opening video sequence. Have someone who doesn't sound like a total dweeb narrate it too.

Bad things happen when you have a plot before you have a game.
I disagree. If there is not a plot there is no direction and in the end the game becomes a circus.

I think the story must be put down very good before making anything. You probably want the units of each faction to look alike and share some special characteristics. If you have no idea about the story then how will you model?

As about the story I think the robot-war is ok. However there has to be more than that. What is every faction's specialities? In TA, ARM was mobile and cloaky while CORE was all powerful. I think each faction should have something special and not just be robots.

In the other hand if BAR is going to be based on BA then there should be the same units, just improved in my opinion, plus a few new ones. Maybe even take off some? Maybe give CORE a super-krog and ARM a super-vulcan?
