FBX black listed? why

I have been trying and trying to resolve my issue with z is up and have been spending time with blender and unity.

Anyway, because unity people seem to love fbx, I figured what the hell, I'll export an FBX.

the exporter has options like Y IS UP and FORWARD DIRECTION!

So why is this format black listed? are we just using a dated version of the assimp?

No, it's deliberate.

This is where it was introduced.

Also, .blend should not really be whitelisted because spring assimp doesn't work with .blend files authored by Blender versions newer than 2.63.

Unfortunately, updating Spring Assimp to upstream is a manual labor of the boring kind, so nobody bothered yet.

What is so hard? If it is grunt work of the brain numbing kind and I can do that the week after next. I just don't want to deal with the politics of making a patch.

FBX is more widely used and we should support it. It would give us direct access to many unity assets as well and frankly we need to start looking at what the OTHER actually POPULAR engines are doing right.

I mean seriously, what is the big deal? FBX is widely used, so why not??

Still don't understand the mindset of whitelisting them at all.

Apparently while assimp could load them, they were not all fully implemented or something so we have to be protected from ourselves etc

did anybody test the updated_assimp branch which uses current assimp / has fbx whitelisted?

yeah, the collision is there but the model doesn't show for some reason.

Here is my model file, I am not sure if I did the export right as far as the axis goes but it should at least be a model

I just checked, unity loads it fine, so the model is there.

when loading this model in assimp-viewer (from assimp homepage) i get the error message:
FBX-DOM unsupported, old format version, supported are only FBX 2011, FBX 2012 and FBX 2013
so you have to "convert" to this format to make it work i guess. not sure why spring doesn't shown an error message.

yeah, and it looks like I cannot export an older version. I am having zero luck finding an older exporter or a converter to the older version.

can you retry with an export of blender 2.72a please?

sadly there is pretty few information about the supported format in assimp / the exported format version of blender.
