Actually, every single unit has to be unique.

That's a little short-sighted in my opinion, but the tyranny of the majority being what it is, I suppose you have to give the people what they want.

I think that would be ok to clone units, if you were making a Desert Storm mod that has Nato/USA/RUssian forces, but not in TA..

In Ta every single unit was unique.
No, video games aren't all about realism, but it doesn't hurt in most cases. In this community, realism seems to be a painful subject, so I won't bring it up again.

Making two units look very similar makes me cry BECAUSE i cannot tell them apart on the battlefield. When i see a unit, I want it to be instantly apparent to me what kind of unit it is.

Probably the exception is something like large battleships. They all look like ships with big guns, in varying positions and quantities. However i can look at that and say, hmmm, i have more big guns than he does, and know it is safe to cross.

Hey man, I though what fang did was neat, don't shoot the messenger.

I wasn't specifically aiming at you, smoth. I've seen what some of the members of this community do when you suggest a change, and its not pretty.

I like realism, and that generally means that a lot of units look a lot alike. My solution to Tribulex' complaint would be to zoom in, get a good look, and then blow up everything regardless of what job it does.

Still, if people want different appearances, flex your art muscles and go for it. I just hope that World Domination comes back to life someday so I can get my armies of similar-looking support trucks.

Fang's problem wasn't the concept, it was the implementation. Most of the units bear their weapons on top, so if the weapons were distinct enough then they'd be distinguishable visually. In practicality, the first cut of his units were too similar-looking to be told apart on the battlefield. Fang fixed this when he could.

The other flaw was a design one - Fang thought the dominanat action would be "select all, move"... but in reality, we wanted to keep our plasma (or shotgun or whatever) guys out front and our rocket and AA dudes in back, and needed to tell the constructors from the fighters.

pxtl, that last part is outright untrue, in most of the playtesting, and I was there for much of it we all used formations line move orders and tried to move in groups where appropriate. What fang wanted was a mixed arms approach. Ie, the cannon tanks backed up with rocket, artillery or maybe some radar units.

Oh? Sorry, I must've misunderstood his comments. I just remember the initial complaints of "I can't tell my units apart" were met with "lol, don't try, just use a good mix".

yeah, he didn't want to try and explain the whole mixed arms things. We found after 1-2 games most people were fine and the they were not sometimes a good mix of units would at least help them a bit.

You obviously dont know how to play an rts, or at least play it with any sort of skill. I CHALLENGE YOU, 1v1 any mod (documented on modit) any (non metal/gay) map.

Does the radar not rotating 360 make sense?

I have to agree with you, Tribulex, I am a rather lousy RTS player. Also, I'm afraid I can't accept your challenge because I only have a 56k connection shared for my entire household.

I got a screen of the WIP on the texture so far.

Tons and tons of unfinished stuff left to do, but the basic layout is there, I just have to finish the details.

Shouldn't take me too much longer to get it all finished up though, also thinking about doing the camo into Teamcolor like on the Pillager.

I liked it before it was textured, and I like it even more now. You managed to make the radar truck look a little scary, Mr. D. Most Impressive!

Nice.

Maybe some more exposed 'guts' and less armour to show that this is a more fragile, highly specialised/very technical unit that has a technical purpose but needs to be protected?
