BA 1v1 tournament (20/09, GMT 19): Thursday Night Rumble #1

Post by tzaeru »

As I talked to a couple of players, it turned out that many have autumn weekends awfully busy, so I'll try and see if we can fill up a tournament mid-week! If it turns out to work well, I'm planning to host bi-weekly thursday tournaments.

Again, if you wish changes to rules or some additional maps, post here or to Balanced Annihilation forums.

--------------------------------------

Time:
The next thursday, 20th of September at 19.00 GMT or 14.00 EST.

Location:
SPADS hosts, if we run short of them, I'll add temporary 1v1 hosts. Use !preset duel

Scoring:
Best of 3 wins and moves to next tier.

Players:
Minimum of 6!

Maps:
Loser chooses the next map, otherwise, all tiers have same starting map.

Tier 1:
Trojan Hills V2

Tier 2:
Eye Of Horus

Semi-Final:
Icy Run v2

Final:
Red Comet

Bronze Match:
Desert Cliffs V1

Map pool from where the losing player can select:
Geyser_PlainsTNM04_V3
Darkside Remake
Comet Catcher Redux
MoonQ10x
Field of Isis
IsisDelta_V02
Altair Crossing (v2 if there was such )
Archer’s Valley v5
Lowland_Crossing_TNM01-V4
Barren
SnowAlert
Shining Islands

In addition, the losing player can select any map the SPADS 1v1 autohosts have that both players agree to.

Sign up at Challonge if you know you can make it, since the tournament is a no-go if the minimum of 6 players don't sign up in advance.

Please discuss maps, the exact time of start and the tournament type in here or more preferably, at Balanced Annihilation forums!

This is just great! Joining right away. If I can help somehow, just ask.

I think a live broadcast would be awesome, like MACOSX did in Peewee cup 2012. Would anyone do that?

Suggest additional maps to Balanced Annihilation forum's topic. ;)

I think one or two water maps in the loser's choice pool would be great to have. Maybe Shining Islands?

It it be cool if someone did. Probably the computer we have has enough powah to record/stream while playing, but I can only pronounce Finglish and am a player anyway.

Btw! We're 8 now, which is great and more would be just better. Doesn't matter if it ends up uneven, can always move someone straight to 2nd tier or so.

I'm not planning to include any water map in the starting maps of tiers. The water map(s) would be in the pool from where the loser of first round can choose. :-)

Btw! Do you think Double Elimination or Swiss is better type for the tournament than Single Elimination? I'd go for Consolation (like Single Elimination, except that losers of first turn are placed in their own brackets and winner of that bracket is the Consolation Winner, i.e. 2nd best player. This way, seeding matters less what goes to 2nd and 3rd place.) but it doesn't seem to be an option..

I made a tournament with single elimination but it ends quite frustating for some players (eliminated 2-0 against a strong opponent). So finally i made a tournament with round robin (qualification in 2 groups) then semi finals and final with single elimination.

Two water maps i used: Kivekset_Halkova_Bassotaajuss_VO2 and Finns Revenge RV4. I used them when score was 1-1.

I will update elo after tournaments.

+1 for a two group round robin and then semis + final.

schizo shores is a nice water/land 1v1 map is you don't already have it.

Hmm, is there some specific reason why you found Double Elimination to not be fit?

I don't have practical experience on it, but seems it might have a bit too many rounds and might take long.

For round robin, did you still use best of 3 wins for a round?

I think Double elimination are as long as round robin + single elimination.

Round robin + single elimination is longer than single elimination but not that much, i calculate that it took maybe 45 more min. If organization is good, it is playable in maybe 2 hours and no more than 3 (for 8 players).

I didnt choose double elimination because i found that some players loose interest and leave when they loose and in that system sometimes someone can be eliminated by another guy and they still can meet again in final too.

For round robin, i had 4 players in each group so i made three rounds.
players A,B,C and D.

Round 1 A-C B-D
Round 2 A-B C-D
Round 3 A-D B-C

So three games for each guy and everyone meet everyone once and only once.
I had a problem because there were equal results between 3 of them. So i made a tie break between those three.

The tournament is finished and I won the bet I had on Teddy. 8)

The complete bracket with all replays is found from Challonge's page.

Supreme Champion (Gold): [teh]Teddy
Worthy Adversary (Silver): [Bro]tzaeru
Maybe Next Time (Bronze): Esorp

Agonya forfeit after first match of the first tier and keieiiieieoooo forfeit the bronze match.

See you again next month.. :P

EDIT: And thanks to all participants (and Danchan for attaching the replays), hopefully we can have more of these!

Yeah, I didn't think I'd survive even to semi-finals!

Got lucky, that's all. ;)
