Engine naming thread

Post by bobthedinosaur »

Well SkyStar and I decided to rename the Engines (player's mech) in the WIP game Engine's of War, since previously it was going with a story line with a fictional war between Korea and Japan, but is no longer and the names don't seem to fit.

Here are the units that need names:

#2: Sly Fox(I know that sounds a little dumb, but it has that sorta fox like look to the face, and its a sniper unit.)

#4: Ballista(Made me think of MW's Catapault in a way)

Is there any existing naming convention at all?

Well, they're "Engines", so work with that.

Crankshaft,
Piston,
Turbine,
and Hellbore.

The first names where in order of apperance: Rook, Bishop, Knight, and Queen. And then they were changed to Japanese and Korean names like: Kyu Jutsu and Kusanagi

Orthodox huh? That is a pretty creative name for a mech. :-)

I wanted something with the connotations of big, heavy and prone to stomping things. Orthodox.

They're armour suits, with pilots inside right? Perhaps name them after garments. In order; Anorak, Poncho, Blazer, Kilt.

I wouldn't say they are suits. I mean a tank isn't a suit. They are more or less walking giants that are piloted.

I like GuessMyName's suggestions best so far - though Bulbo doesn't really work for me. Though I think Knight could stick with that one, an alternative might be Raptor ?
(summary, in order: Paladin, Stallion, Raptor, Orthodox)

Fox, Ballista and Toad aren't bad either - Turbine and Hellbore I think are interesting, but I don't really dig the naming scheme.

It depends on role. A fast unit might be the Raptor, a tank might be the Paladin, a cloaky unit might be the Shadow, etc.

I didn't mean to kill discussion here... thanks for all the suggestions so far, but (at least) I'm all ear for more :) !

Saktoth, the Engines all have a role which (at least for me) goes with what they look like. What might not be so clear is that the third one (aka Knight) has Jump-Jets, and a close combat weapon. That's how I got the connotation Bird-of-Prey, in game you would often "pounce" on your enemy (and then tear them up from close) - seeing that it's a bit bulky, I guess Lynx, Panther or perhaps even Orca might work in that vein as well...
Oh, and the second Engine (sniper style), might have cloak - so Shadow would work for him :).

Some description to help then?
From order top to bottom.

1) Has the most armor, a grenade launcher, and the trash can on his back lowers to be a multi shot rocket launcher.

2) Sniper, can cloak, not very strong HP.

3) Decent armor, has jump jets, a sword, and some kind of mecha scaled SMG.

4) Slow walking missile battery, with flamer throwers if you get to close.
